Guest guest
Sharon, I believe Duncan is correct in that it won't cure poison ivy- BUT, not for the reasons he stated. Poison Ivy is a reaction to a plant, not a virus, bacteria, worm, or parasite- as far as I know!? Good luck with that! YUK!! Guest guest
Try Rhus Tox Poison Ivy has anybody had any luck with ANYTHING to relive the itching/draining and speed the healing of poison ivy?? My wife and I both have it and are using Zanfel which has been working ok but I'm looking for alternatives. Guest guest
When I was a kid, washing it with Fels Naptha or PhisoHex soap worked well at first exposure since poison oak is oil based toxin. What you have actually is called " contact dermatitis " from poison oak. For the itching, old time preferred treatment was calamine lotion which helps dry the lesions, but hydrocorizone cream (strongest you can get) helps. My book here doesnt list hydrocortisone, but calamine is still one of the top preferred. Hydrocortizone used to be Rx only, now you can buy it OTC any drugstore. Benedryl helps reduce histamines. Aloe vera gel might help with itching and burning. Take extra vitamin C with bioflavanoids. Strong tea made from equal parts lime water and white oak bark to make a compress. Replace with a new compress when that one dries out. Witch hazel is mentioned as helpful. you can also use topically: black walnut extract(antiseptic), bloodroot(reduce swelling), echinacea(promotes healing), goldeseal(for skin inflamation), and myrrh(powerful antiseptic). do not use bloodroot if you are pregnant. Stay cool. sweating makes it worse. I guess that means no going to the gym until it clears up!! tryin425 <headnsouth@...> wrote: has anybody had any luck with ANYTHING to relive the itching/draining and speed the healing of poison ivy?? Guest guest
So sorry for you! I am terribly allergic to poison ivy (6 weeks before it goes without this treatment) and have tried just about everything out there. Here's what worked best for me (I've moved out of the danger zone now!): externally for itching: apply buttermilk as needed internally: homeopathic C30 (higher if you can get it) remedy for poison ivy, Rhus toxicodendron (sp?). If you can get a mixed formula for it, get it! Sorry I can't recommend a brand. Ask a naturopath or at your local health food store. Keep it at home for the future because the sooner you take it the better it will work. Mine is from a company called Pascoe but I don't think you can get it in North America. BTW, this works good for herpes too and if you catch it at the first tingle the herpes is gone within 24 hours. Doesn't work if it's already broken out though. Here's to a speedy recovery! Guest guest
Hi, Oh, I know the feeling, and it is indeed awful! Quite a few years ago, I had poison ivy so badly that I finally got a prescription after a month or so. It took several doses to even begin to get rid of the rash. I was left with several large scars (they mainly look like discolorations) from that episode. At that time, I knew very little about natural healing. Last year, I was somehow exposed to poison ivy again, and my heart sank upon realizing that there were itchy pimples popping up all over! I remembered the last time, when it had basically just been on my legs. Well, I quickly searched for natural remedies, and filled a small spray bottle with homemade colloidal silver. I misted every one of the bumps I could find. There was intense itching for several minutes, and then relief! The relief lasted for hours, and then I would spray again. The rash never even spread significantly, and most pimples just dried up within a few days. Can't remember exactly, but the rash was gone in probably just over a week. Hope this information helps some, Loretta --- tryin425 <headnsouth@...> wrote: > has anybody had any luck with ANYTHING to relive the > itching/draining > and speed the healing of poison ivy?? Guest guest
This works for jelly fish stings as well. it is the ammonia in the urine that does the trick. Guest guest
I've heard urine therapy is used for a lot of maladies. There are listservs that discuss its uses. Some drink their own urine daily. I wouldn't suggest this though if you are actively chelating metals. Pete <headnsouth@...> wrote: Never heard of this option have you ever used it to combat PI?? Guest guest
This is the old tried and true way to get rid of poison ivy almost overnight. Get a new bottle of " white shoe polish " and apply it to the affected areas or poor some of your old polish over a clean soft rag or cotton and apply liberally to the area and let it dry. Reapply if needed the next day. You will truly be amazed.

Guest guest
A friend of mine is having terrible trouble with Poison Ivy this year. She gets bad rashes and then hives like me. She is trying to do things naturally but it just won't go away and now she has a new outbreak. I had her soaking in epsom salt but it's not helping her for some reason. would a magnesium lotion help? If so can anyone recommend a good brand? The new rashes are on her neck and face which isn't easy to soak in an epsom salt bath. Guest guest
I KID you NOT.... Rhus Tox is THE best thing in this world for poison Ivy HANDS DOWN period. I had it on 2/3's of my body ... I tried EVERYTHING....and more. Finally I went to a holistic doctor who put me on Rhus Toxicodendron or " Rhus Tox " for short. I researched it and was nervous because it is actually poison ivy in VERY small amounts. But I was going crazy and so I did it. AMAZING. Never mind all the treatments that are to " help " with itching, or " sooth the skin " or any mediocre help. Rhus Tox will not only take the itch completely away in minutes (if taking the proper amount) but I read it also will prevent the rash when taken as a preventative. I also read the Indians made tea out of the plant as a preventative...I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon What worked for me: Once you already have the rash: washing with Zanfel to get ALL the Urushiol Oil (the stuff that reacts with your skin and causes the itch problem) off of your skin http://www.zanfel.com/help/ slathering Aztec Healthing Clay all over my body and letting it dry...remove it after about 1 hour, it takes the itch away for about 2-3 hours. Rhus Tox ( you can even get it at Whole Foods) either as a preventative or a cure : http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=BT-1075 & sourceTyp\ e=ps & source=yi & gcid=C19283x009 & keyword=BT-1075 I also read the a dip in the ocean is REALLY good for Poison Ivy...it was cold when my hubby got it, so I made him a " sole " bath. He said it worked great for him ! http://www.americanbluegreen.com/html/moon_bathing.html > > A friend of mine is having terrible trouble with Poison Ivy this year. > She gets bad rashes and then hives like me. Guest guest
Great thanks! She tried the plantain and it worked well, she was amazed. I will let her know these other remedies in case that stops working for some reason. Somehow she is getting into it a lot... possibly a neighbor is burning it. Guest guest
You didn't say age. Let's hope she doesn't get it. My husband doesn't, I swear I didn't see it and I would get it. I've had it in some nasty spots. One time just building a fire and handling the wood, dark. Slapping bugs, well I ended up with poison ivy all over the side of my face and in my ear. Nasty. It may not be what others would agree, but prednisone has been my best friend more than once with poison ivy. Treating at home, when I was younger, I swear I lived with poison ivy none stop. Prednisone clears it up fast, beautifully and you don't have the need to itch. For a child, this could drag on and on and then dealing with infections, bleeding, spreading. So I'm for a trip to the doctor if need. Shower, wash clothes in hot water. I found swimming in the lakes and sun helped when I was a kid. My favorite was Ivy Dry, not sure if around any more. We moved into a new home, was cleaning the yard up, no leaves out. I was pulling poison ivy vines out, didn't know it. You should have seen me then. Another great and needed dose of pred. I'm all for the occasional " drug " if needed. Miserable. Good luck! Tammy [ ] Poison Ivy my girl walked through tons of poison ivy. is there any preventative measure that i could take? or is there something you would recommend at the first sign of any trouble. i don't need more things to deal with at this time. thanks
Guest guest
How fascinating! I was going to reply earlier about how terrific chamomile is on rashes from poisonous plants. I've seen rashes literally disappear as chamomile is worked over the site. So I just looked up chamomile and see that it is high in magnesium and calcium!! http://www.streetdirectory.com/food_editorials/beverages/teas/what_is_so_good_ab\ out_chamomile_tea.html Lukewarm Chamomile tea is used in Germany from aged 3 months in babies with digestive problems. Thought I'd add that in for parents whose children suffer tummy upsets:-)) From: fionam3875 <fionam3875@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Poison Ivy Date: Tuesday, 28 September, 2010, 3:48  on my doggy group someone posted that if you react to poison ivy you have a magnesium deficiency. Also, look around for jewelweed--it's in bloom right now and usu grows near poison ivy. squeeze juice of stem onto the rash. Very distinctive plant. best wishes, Fiona > > my girl walked through tons of poison ivy. is there any preventative measure that i could take? or is there something you would recommend at the first sign of any trouble. i don't need more things to deal with at this time. thanks >
Guest guest
I have been told that you do not break out from poison ivy until the third time you are exposed. I do not remember the source but have seen this to be true so I am not sure if it just depended on that person or family or others have experienced it too. So if she doesn't break out, that's good but do not assume the next times will be the same. Check out this information (sort of confirmed the above) with some good information on treatment and prevention. http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/poison_ivy_dermati.html > > my girl walked through tons of poison ivy. is there any preventative measure that i could take? or is there something you would recommend at the first sign of any trouble. i don't need more things to deal with at this time. thanks >
