Hi Rebekah had her first port put in during a surgery time she had a nissen

done and she kept blowing IV's (22) Picc's (2) in 11 days so we put the port

in it blew 10 months later. We had the new one put in same day surgery she

had motrin for 2 days at home and swelling and bruising lasted 10 days. You

would never know she has it. The dressing was simple gauze and antibiotic

cream. The CF clinic flushes her port. They use these big overgrown Q-tips

and betadine to sterilize the area around and over it then they flush it and

cover it and she is done. Where the port is was my choice as bekah has little

space left with a nissen up the middle of her chest and needing pt. Her port

sits just over her shoulder. The freedom to use her arms and legs to move

around is a lot better than trying to keep her still. One of the reasons I

have the CF clinic do the flush, with her last port the home nurses were

doing it when the line blew and they just kept flushing away as I watched

this bubble form under her arm where the line popped the goofy nurses were

not watching at all. I won't let them back in my house! The CF clinic sends

someone from oncology to flush Bekah and they are so good with her they make

her laugh. Oh we use to use the emela cream to numb her side for the flush

after a few flushes the skin loses feeling and it doesn't bother her. I am

sending lots of good wishes your way. Let me know if I can help and let me

know how everything goes. Becky
