Guest guest
whoa! i think i'd write a note to the hospital about educating their interns better!! i personally have kinda made it a goal to educate ppl about what its like to be obese. especially now cuz ppl look at me (5' 1/4 " , 130lbs) and have NO clue that i used to weigh 268lbs!! when i was going through my emt class last semester we came to a section about carrying out patients and our teacher, a fire capt/paramedic, commented on how sometimes if your patient is 500lbs it takes 6 firemen and then you might have to remove a window to get the patient out...there were a few snickers from class so i raised my hand and reminded everyone that patients are under enough stress from just having to call 9-1-1, don't you think they KNOW they are morbidly obese and don't you think they are embarassed and even mortified when they see 6 firemen having to come in and carry them out using their bed sheets cuz they can't fit onto a gurney?? or if the window/door has to be removed to fit them out?? luckily no one made a big deal about it or made jokes about it but just the snickering po'd me! and our fire capt reminded them that we are there to take care of ppl and not judge them in any way. anyhoo, take care! kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal weight: 135lbs current weight: 130lbs > I was hospitalized last week for treatment of my third abdominal > abscess since my RNY surgery on 12/13/02. Guest guest
Mensa_joe, Are you sure you had surgery on 12/13/02. That doc is good. I think it is probably a printing error. Hope so anyway. Or my calendar is way off. haha God Bless, Carl INTERN FLUNKS BEDSIDE MANNER 101 I was hospitalized last week for treatment of my third abdominal abscess since my RNY surgery on 12/13/02. Doctors think I may have a micro perforation in my plumbing that didn't show up on leak tests. An intern asked me why I'd had the RNY. I explaineed that it was for weight loss to which he replied; " Couldn't you have just eaten less? " I was so shocked by the callousness and stupidity of his question that I made some dumb reply. In hindsight, I should have smacked my forehead with my open palm and said; " Holy sh_t doctor, why didn't I think of that! " Where oh where are those witty retorts when you really need them. Guest guest
Bravo, Kate, sometimes it's so hard for others to understand. You handled it wonderfully, IMHO. And we need to remember (my smart-mouthed wisecrack aside) that docs only know what they've been taught, and most medical schools really don't teach a lot about morbid obesity - or at least they didn't when I worked at one. And also, that docs are taught what their teachers know, which is what they're taught by the docs before them. (Talk about the child abuse theory of education <G>.) Bariatrics is a specialty, and I'm not sure that it's even a traditional hospital internship specialty, i.e., it might be one that docs end up going into after their internship, as opposed to surgery, OB, internal medicine, etc., which they usually get on rotation. If we have any nurses or docs on our list who are more up on this than I am, please chime in. Guest guest
Joe - Sorry to hear about your hospitalization. I know what you mean about those witty retorts. I can never think of them on the spot either. Did you file a complaint with the hospital? Have they got your problem fixed now? Hope it's all in the past soon. By the way, you are doing fabulous with your weight loss. Jeanne in WI Age 39 Open RNY 05/21/2002 314/ 263.5 /150-175 5' 8 " djgraves@...
