Guest guest
Hi, We are travelling to India in a couple of days. In an attempt to boost our 2.5 yr old daughter's immune system, we were wondering if we can use Echinicea/Goldenseal as a supplement during our 2-month stay there ? Does it help or is it something that's not supposed to be used as a preventive supplement ? Any info would be very appreciated. Thanks, Suman,
Guest guest
I'd go with Cod Liver Oil as an immune system helper. Echinacea and Goldenseal would be like using antibiotics as preventative measures, not my choice. Guest guest
My understanding is you can use them preventively as well as to fight a current infection, but you're not supposed to use echinacea continuously as it loses effectiveness, so skip a week every few weeks. But check a reputable herbal guide for details, I'm relying on memory. Also, I found that I can't take echinacea or goldenseal on an empty stomach, it causes nausea and vomiting, so be careful about that. A tincture might be easier to hold down than tablets and would take less space in your luggage. Also, GSE (grapefruit seed extract) is handy for purifying water and food, is compact and portable, would be handy to take. That said I had absolutely no problems with food-borne illness when I was in India for 2 weeks a few years ago, but I'm sure it depends on where you go, the facilities you stay at, and how careful you are. I stayed at an ashram for a week, then a good hotel for a couple of days, then an Ayurvedic resort for the balance of the time, in Kerala. How long will you be in India and where are you going? I'm so jealous... Have fun! Guest guest
Which things are you worried about? French Green Clay may prevent parasites. Artemisinin is good against malaria. Probiotics would also be good as overall preventative care - have you seen the study about probiotics daily preventing colds and flu in children? You can carry iodine and put drops in the water to kill amoebas, etc. - the iodine should also boost her immune system. (I'd do that even for bottled water, you don't really know how *clean* it is.) Magnesium supplements are a safety measure against high levels of fluoride in some parts of India (up to 7 ppm in the water). Best wishes and enjoy your trip! There's a movie, " Stolen Childhoods " that has a whole segment about the practice in India of giving children as almost slaves as collateral for a loan. The parents can never pay it off and the kids languish in terrible working conditions. One man, Kailash Satyarthi pays off the loans then lets the parents repay him in installments so they get the kids back in school, out of those conditions, and eventually back home again. It would be neat to see his place. See http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/satyarthi.html If I were going, I'd try to see Navdanya, too - Vandana Shiva's organization. http://www.navdanya.org/ > > Hi, > > We are travelling to India in a couple of days. > > In an attempt to boost our 2.5 yr old daughter's immune system, we were > wondering if we can use Echinicea/Goldenseal as a supplement during our 2-month > stay there ? > > Does it help or is it something that's not supposed to be used as a preventive > supplement ? > > Any info would be very appreciated. > > Thanks, > Suman, >
