It seems, in an attempt to sweeten the pill of economic ruin, we

can't have a recession without having some recession chic. These are

things that are cheap and cheerful – at a time when cheapness is

inherently desirable and cheerfulness is always a help – that we

consume instead of the expensive and presumably even more cheerful

things that we used to be able to afford but apparently no longer

can. The example of this featured in the newspapers last week was the

return of offal...
