Guest guest
For the dandruff, she could try unflavored milk of magnesia. I've read that it can clear up dandruff and skin infections pretty quickly. Is she vegetarian? They tend to have poor hair. She could try protease enzymes to ensure her body is utilizing proteins in her diet. > > My wife, inspite of a clean diet, is losing a lot of hair and the root is thinning out & breaks away; Dandruff exists. > > I would appreciate any further input on what can be done. > > She is desperate to try any useful products also, apart from diet, and we came across this as the best in Walmart, > > http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12018878#Ingredients > > but has many questionable ingredients. Guest guest
Hair loss is one of the symptoms of thyroid problems. Kathy From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of repent_kog_is_near Sent: Monday, September 07, 2009 6:03 AM Subject: natural hair products. My wife, inspite of a clean diet, is losing a lot of hair and the root is thinning out & breaks away; Dandruff exists. I would appreciate any further input on what can be done. She is desperate to try any useful products also, apart from diet, and we came across this as the best in Walmart, http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12018878#Ingredients but has many questionable ingredients. Guest guest
That product looks like a waste of time to me. I don't think anything externally applied can affect hair growth (except perhaps negatively). The hair outside the follicle is dead tissue, I doubt you can revive the follicles by applying something to the hair shaft. If you want to try anything, though, try slightly warmed coconut oil, applied liberally, put a shower cap on and a towel turban over it to retain heat for 20 minutes or so. If any oil is absorbed by the scalp--and I don't know that it is--it's only nourishing oil. I would think diet or stress levels has to be where the problem lies. I'd first want to make sure she's getting sufficient good fats (Omega 3, EPA/DHA, GLA, and naturally saturated fats). And no matter what one eats, if undergoing a lot of stress, you can be losing various critical nutrients at much higher than usual rates, including magnesium, zinc, B-vitamins, to name some I just read about last night. Try addressing stress and optimize nutrient intake. Prescription for Nutritional Healing says heredity, hormones, and aging are factors involved in hair loss and that in some cases the immune system mistakes the follicles for foreign tissue and attacks them. Has your wife had a baby recently? Apparently it's normal to have hair loss after childbirth because normal loss is suppressed during pregnancy. There are more than 2 full pages of recommendations in the book on hair loss so I recommend checking it out. One that jumped out is to be sure to get enough biotin, especially if you eat raw eggs. Guest guest
I lose a ton of hair because of my thyroid condition. Has she been tested? If my thyroid replacement is high enough the hair loss can be extreme and I am also deficient on the vitamins/minerals listed but despite supplementing it wasn't helping me much probably because of my unrealized gluten issues. I cut gluten out and the thyroid is doing TONS better, it doesn't hurt all the time now only when I get really stressed. I'm still losing a lot of hair but it does grow back in so its not terrible thin. Probiotics helped me a lot and I need to get back on them, as does of course naturally fermented foods. And cod liver oil also. I find my cats shed a lot less even if fed improper food like dry kibble if they are supplemented with quality cod liver oil. Guest guest
Thanks for your helpful info, Dawn: The doctors said she does not have hypo. But the morning temp is only around 97F. The natural doctors have extensive harmone tests but that range in the 400-700$ range, and we can't afford it (or we try to avoid, by eating healthly, hoping something will help) she probably gets gluten from Ezekial bread which has sprouted wheat. Thanks for the advice on Probiotics & CLO. CLO, primarily for Vit D, right? Guest guest
That's a low temperature. Mine gets down to 96.5 or so and I'm still working on it. Most doctors are clueless about thyroid. You should get a copy of The Thyroid Solution by Ridha Arem (that's my endocrinologist). Though he's not a natural doctor he is excellent on diagnosis and has got me feeling better than I did though I'd like to take more of a healing approach. He does not think it's something that can be healed. The CLO is for Vit D, A and the Omega 3's. If she has a low temp, hair loss it is looking likely there are thyroid issues especially considering how common it is these days. I would not eat the Ezekial bread. I have not found one that did not contain soy and soy is very bad for the thyroid as well as other things. Only naturally fermented soy should be eaten. Here is the first place I learned about thyroid problems when I took myself to the endocrinologist after being dismissed by the family doctor. <http://thyroid.about.com/> http://thyroid.about.com/ The family doctor felt it was unnecessary to test me despite the fact I had many of the symptoms, unexplained weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, low temperature and I had PAIN in my neck that is actually my thyroid! I saw the endo and he diagnosed me right away with autoimmune thyroiditis and started monitoring me closely for cancer because of some suspicious nodules. There is an article in one of the latest Wise Traditions newsletters from Weston A Price by an endocrinologist that does natural practice. I am considering trying to get a phone consult if I can afford it after I see my regular Endo and pay out of pocket (no insurance) for my labs. I have to get tested for many things not just TSH as this doesn't really tell us much except what the pituitary gland is or isn't doing. I have also read things about taking iodine from Dr. Brownstein but that should be done with care. Others on this list have done that I think and can advise you perhaps. I have started taking mine again now that I can't get my Armour and the endo I saw last year, totally inept, doesn't give a damn about getting me some alternative. It seems to be making me feel a little better but I hate taking the Lugol's. tastes bleh. Good luck! Guest guest
Most drug stores should have it, I got mine in the grocery store (I use it for deoderant). You get that she applies it to her scalp, right? Is her scalp itchy or does it burn? I'm asking because I got something living in mine once that made it hurt and my hair fell out - I think it may have been some mites. I put coconut oil on the places and it burned like crazy (like they were burrowing?) and then the next day it was over - no problems. But if her hair is breaking off that sounds different, like more of a protein problem or problem with the follicles. > > > > > > My wife, inspite of a clean diet, is losing a lot of hair and the root is thinning out & breaks away; Dandruff exists. > > > > > > I would appreciate any further input on what can be done. > > > > > > She is desperate to try any useful products also, apart from diet, and we came across this as the best in Walmart, > > > > > > http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12018878#Ingredients > > > > > > but has many questionable ingredients. Guest guest
Thanks Dawn for sharing your experience. I assume your temp was lower than 96.5 before and it has got better to 96.5? I checked amazon.com and Ridha Arem has 2 books one from 2007 and 2008; which one do you recommend or either is ok? (2007 is " a revolutionary mind-body program for regaining your emotional and physical health " ; 2008 is " the doctor-developed, clinically proven plan to diagnose thyroid imbalance and reverse thyroid symptoms " ) His assertion that it cannot be healed, tells me he is more to reality-type, which is what I want; how to keep healing and keep on, by God's grace. How much CLO do you take a day? Is that the main protocol of Ridha Arem? Do you think sea veggie products from edenfoods.com (japan) or seaveg.com will be a good source of pure iodine? I hope you are able to get a good idea from the blood works. Guest guest
ok. milk of magnesia to the scalp! It does not burn, but itchy all the time, and sometimes the root of the hair area pains if she touched with fingers. She does take protein, but you think she may need added enzymes to digest them? Guest guest
Dawn My understanding and observation is that with Ezekial bread they are not gluten free, but they do have a version of soy-free (7 grain bread); their other sprouted breads all have sprouted organic soy, not the regular. Guest guest
Hi Dan, I do eat that brand's gluten free bread sometimes though I think it has soy lecithin in it. That's good that the 7 grain sprouted bread is soy free. I probably got annoyed after checking the others and seeing it so I quit. =) Now it's moot as I can't eat wheat/gluten. Guest guest
Hi Dan, No Dr Arem was appalled that I was taking CLO and wanted me to buy his products. I haven't tried to talk to him about it in a couple of years but I will be taking a couple of articles with me to give him. He does believe in supplements and better diet but from what I can see that includes a low carb and low saturated fat diet =( I go to him for lab tests, thyroid hormone replacement and monitoring of the swelling to watch for cancer though I will refuse the radioactive iodine if it ever comes to that. I was taking a lot of CLO for awhile and it was helping a lot. I believe I was 25,000 IU of Vitamin A. This is what Sally Fallon recommended to me. Unfortunately I wasn't able to keep buying it and stopped taking it but I am about to start up again. My son has been getting it since I was pregnant and in his NT formula since he was born. I know Sally said I could probably do 40,000 for a few weeks to try and make up for my deficiencies. I was/am very deficient in Vitamin D. My brother also has my autoimmune disorder and his was critically low but he refuses to take anything but the synthetic stuff and has limited benefit from it and of course he gets no Vitamin A as he won't eat vegetables, won't eat anything really but steak, ground beef, Doritos and candy bars. I haven't read his newer versions of the book, I had his book _The Thyroid Solution_ which helped me a lot when I was first learning about thyroid problems. I was at around 96.5 for a normal temperature since I was 12 or so. Now I am averaging 97.4 most days. Guest guest
It's possible. I think there are a lot of people who are unable to make use of dietary proteins for some reason - some food additive or digestive disorder or chronic infection is messing up their ability to make or use protease. Just what I'm observing on some health groups. Fibromyalgia seems to be an inability to get enough tryptophan from food, which is crazy because it's abundant. Nobody's looking for the inability to use protein yet, tho, or not much anyways. > > > > > > > > > > My wife, inspite of a clean diet, is losing a lot of hair and the root is thinning out & breaks away; Dandruff exists. > > > > > > > > > > I would appreciate any further input on what can be done. > > > > > > > > > > She is desperate to try any useful products also, apart from diet, and we came across this as the best in Walmart, > > > > > > > > > > http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12018878#Ingredients > > > > > > > > > > but has many questionable ingredients. Guest guest
I have read that thyroid problems can't be corrected if there is an underlying adrenal disorder without healing the adrenals first (see Primal Body, Primal Mind by Nora Gedgaudas). Hormones are so interrelated...if adrenal burnout or exhaustion is at all suspected, I'd try to address that (been through that myself). Ross's books are helpful on both adrenal and thyroid issues (The Diet Cure, The Mood Cure). Also check out www.adrenalfatigue.org. Guest guest
Has anyone here cured themselves of adrenal fatigue/burnout? I have heard of a lot of people being diagnosed with it, and going through treatment for it, but have yet to hear from anyone that has come through it and has been cured. Wondering what worked for you if you have found a successful treatment. Guest guest
Thanks. I've thought there was an adrenal issue for a long time. I've had to eliminate a source of extreme emotional stress from my life by cutting off a relationship with a family member that has BPD. =( It isn't easy but I think it's keeping me from being able to heal too plus it just makes me a person I don't want to be around my son. I have some of the symptoms I've read about, I can't seem to wake up in the morning.. takes me hours to get my body going and I still feel tired until the afternoon at least. Best time of day for me is evening to about midnight which is why I never want to go to bed. I will ask my Endo about it next week also though I am not sure he will be much help besides trying to put me on drugs again. I am also going to ask him about the lymphadema. I think it is definitely all related and I've noticed it's more on the right side of my body. The lymphadema is on my right side, my thyroid is swollen and has the nodules on the right side and some other things. Interesting enough that's the side I used to have the mercury fillings.
