We have a gas stove...would like to find a separate electric, hot plate style

single burner to make the 3 day broths...obviously one that you can trust the

temperature to remaine constant/low, big enough to fit a large soup pot on and

safe--so we can sleep at night and not worry...

There are several on amazon that have very mixed reviews....

Thanks for any suggestions!

Our gas cooktop needed to be worked on last year, so I bought a cheapo General

Electric, dual burner hot plate at Walmart for 20-something dollars, and it is

now a treasured kitchen appliance. The temperature controls are infinitely

variable from room temperature to full blast, and it is perfect for making

stock. I bring the pot to a boil and then dial it down, checking it frequently

over the course of an hour or so, until it stabilizes at a very low simmer. I

can put a pot of stock on in the afternoon, and it'll be at the same simmer the

next morning. Glass top lids are helpful in that you can check what's going on

in the pot without losing any heat.

I was at Walmart this afternoon, and they had single burner and double burner GE

hotplates in stock. The single burner unit was around $19.

And, yes, I know... it's evil to shop at Walmart, etc. But, in Fairfield Iowa,

it's either shop at Walmart or drive 30 miles to shop at Kmart or Target in

Ottumwa.
