Later they attacked a mission station at Rorke's Drift - big mistake, for it was defended by a small band of a warrior race as fierce as they - Welshmen - and they were repulsed after numerous assaults. Isandhlwana is remembered as a disastrous British defeat, but it was a Pyrrhic victory for the Zulus, who took huge losses that broke the back of the main Zulu army.
