Sick Building's member, Irene Wilkenfeld is credited with finding the

following. I'm going to add the book to my reading list for the Holidays.

>I though I would share two items that appear in the current issue

>(December 1998) of The Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients:

>

>1. There is a new book entitled PRESCRIPTIONS FOR A HEALTHY HOUSE: A

>Practical Guide for Architects, Builders and Homeowners, written by

>some familiar names --- a Elliott, MD and Banta (In Word

>Press - NM, 1998; 260 pages, $29.95 paperback) that has gotten a very

>good review (even made the front cover). " The authors have

>classified indoor pollutant sources into five categories: volatile

>organic compounds, toxic by-products of combustion, pesticides,

>electro-magnetic field pollution and naturally occurring pollutants.

>Each pollutant category is discussed....Prescriptions for a Healthy

>House is organized so well and easy to use, it will make learning

>those new rules and putting them to use, practically painless. "

>(reviewed by Duff)

>2. FINGER PAINTS: " Odors given off by bacteria growing in jars of

>finger paints caused vomiting and landed over 60 students at a

>Manchester, New Hampshire, elementary school and their teachers in

>the hospital. Bacteria on children's hands had found the outdated

>finger paint a perfect medium for growth. Preservatives designed to

>prevent bacteria from multiplying in the paint had apparently become

>ineffective and the bacteria flourished. The lesson for parents and

>teachers is-- don't let little ones stick their hands into jars of

>paint that will be stored for any length of time; prevent

>contamination by pouring paint into a separate container whenever a

>child fingerpaints. " TLfD/P - p. 24 (12/98)
