Guest guest
I sent this message out today to the parents in my daughter¹s preschool class. You may want to share it with parents in your child¹s class as well since the people administering the vaccine are not providing people with this warning. ------ Forwarded Message From: Katrina Cabral <katwoman1934@...> Date: Thu, 19 Nov 2009 13:55:39 -0800 Subject: Heads Up Regarding the Swine Flumist Vaccine Parents, In case you are considering the Flumist vaccine, I learned that your child will be contagious after receiving it because it administers a Œlive¹ virus. I was surprised to hear this since it seemed like a nice alternative to the jab. It seems that the greatest risk of contagion is soon after the vaccine is administered. My niece is a nurse and she is not allowed to return to work for seven days after receiving the Flumist vaccine. So, if you are considering this you should be aware that you could catch the flu from your child or they could give it to someone else. As a courtesy, if you do get it then it would be best if you could time it such that you get it on a Thursday after school and then keep your children indoors over the weekend to avoid exposing anyone in the community. Note that the risk is Œlow¹ but it exists. I have copied the link to the FDA¹s website which has the package insert outlining the risk. See page 19 section 17.2. I¹ve also copied section 17.2 for your convenience. > http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/ > UCM123743.pdf > 17.2 Vaccination with a Live Virus Vaccine > Vaccine recipients or their parents/guardians should be informed by the health > care provider that FluMist is an attenuated live virus vaccine and has the > potential for transmission to immunocompromised household contacts. > Another website with the same clip and an excerpt putting it in to layman¹s > terms is below: > The vaccine is composed of " live " viruses. The vaccine circular, page 21, > section 17.2 warns under the heading " Vaccination with a Live Virus Vaccine " : > " Vaccine recipients or their parents/guardians should be informed by the > health care provider that Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine Live, > Intranasal is an attenuated live virus vaccine AND HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR > TRANSMISSION TO IMMUNOCOMPROMISED HOUSEHOLD CONTACTS " .
