Guest guest
Hi Chiu! Short question -and one of my (as usual) long, and recent, answers cut and pasted from the archives ~ : From: " kiddietalk " <kiddietalk@...> Date: Fri Oct 11, 2002 10:11 pm Subject: Re: EFA info, and do you think they're apraxic?? Hi ! We have lots of information on this at http://www.speechville.com http://www.apraxia.cc and in the archives here. There appears to be a confusion that Omega 3/6 is good for apraxia and Omega 3 alone (cod liver oil etc.) is good for autism and PDD. This is because outside of the CHERAB Foundation's anecdotal reports -both those from parents and then from the CHERAB Foundation anecdotal reports from professional that were presented at The First Apraxia Conference - nobody has decided to document a comparison of Omega 3 alone vs. Omega 3/6 supplementation. Even though only apraxia was talked about -search the archives here and now at other groups -Omega 3/6 appears to stimulate language in every type of late talker from undiagnosed to those diagnosed with autism and PDD or those with syndromes or genetic disorders. Omega 3 alone from fish or flax seed oil you will notice very little -if any changes -and then in a small percentage -you will see a child who may have a moderate or a dramatic change on Omega 3 alone. It's just not common. In addition -for those who's child did improve on Omega 3 -when switched to Omega 3/6 the parents and professionals that work with the child report even more dramatic changes -and always within a day to three weeks. CHERAB outreaches to all types of late talkers -and many children in our group had been diagnosed one time or another with PDD -and some with autism. Whether that was a misdiagnosis -or the EFAs changed the diagnosis I don't know, however most of these children the parents report are no longer considered PDD or autistic. The Omega 3/6 formula we've heard here and from the neurodevelopmental doctors also appears to help with those children with even severe myelin problems. There is a great study online by Dr. ez on those patients with Zellweger's syndrome. http://www.momtahan.com/mmartinez/ Many children with severe or even very mild myelin problems also have apraxia. Caroline IlGrande has shared the exciting news about her daughter here and how Dr. Ming -a pediatric neurologist and PhD and who runs the Autism Center out of UMDNJ believes it's the EFA formula of the ProEFA that has helped her daughter's myelin continue to remylenate to normal -which is amazing -and the same formula is now suspected of also helping with other neurological damage from birth. So why doesn't everyone give their child an Omega 3/6 formula? How would they know to? For some reason nutritionists decided we consume enough Omega 6 in our diets and don't require it in supplements. This was written about and lectured about enough it was just accepted as fact -and went for example unquestioned by the autism groups. I came at it in a different way because in having the diagnosis of apraxia -and at that time being told it's not at all like autism -which I now know is not true at all, there are several overlaps, I found the work done in the UK by Dr. Stordy -her studies on dyspraxic children. Tanner's story is in the book The LCP Solution written by Dr. Stordy and Malcolm Nicholl -the first under apraxia http://www.drstordy.com/stories.html In addition -because some did see great changes on cod liver oil alone, I mean it's not like it never works -and because the average person didn't understand the difference between Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils, fish oils got a reputation of being good -but of course " they don't work for all -just some " Which again is because almost all the parents were not using the right formula. Once on the right formula -the fish oils will work for almost all our kids -and help bring them a voice. The right formula works for so many that for the few it doesn't work for -we all feel sorry for those parents. I don't know why it doesn't work for all -that's why we need research. Again -even if logically it makes sense that we don't need to supplement our children with any Omega 6 -without the small amount of Omega 6, GLA from the primrose or borage oil most of us use -the Omega 3 alone doesn't appear to help our children with speech, focus and attention, and behavior at all or that much. GLA has anti inflammatory properties -I have said before that perhaps the GLA helps the EPA and DHA get to where it's needed in the tiny vessels of the brain -to cross the blood brain barrier. In addition -I know from one of the neurodevelopmental pediatricians that used to recommend blood analysis first -that the success rate with the blood work was only about 50%. The results (again) for those of us that just give our child a ProEFA or other Omega 3/6 supplement like it a day? Almost all. Maybe the belief in cod liver oil also began because it was once believed (still is?) that Vitamin A helps with autism. Cod liver oil -or any fish oil made from the liver of the fish naturally contains Vitamin A. Fish oil made from any other area of the fish doesn't contain Vitamin A. ProEFA, Efalex and EyeQ for example all are made of fish oil that is not from the liver -so they do not have Vitamin A in them. So why am I telling you all this? If you add cod liver oil with an Omega 3/6 formula you are changing the formula -which could be better -or not -for your child. You would be increasing the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 -which keep in mind for whatever reason without the Omega 6 the fish oils don't work at all or as well for most of our children. In addition -you would be raising the DHA slightly more than the EPA -and most of us found higher EPA to be better (read why at http://www.equazen.com ) The formula I think is the best? EPA about 150 to 250 mg DHA about 100 mg GLA about 40 mg Bottom line -doesn't matter what your child is diagnosed with -as long as your child has a communication impairment and is not allergic to fish -show all of the reports from the websites listed to your child's doctor and start your child on an Omega 3/6 formula similar to above. The changes are again almost all -and quick. If it happened only here or there it could be a coincidence -it happens like clockwork -same improvements around the same time to every single child. And just in case your worried about giving EFAs to your young child - here's a site for the reasons to give it to all babies: A site for babies. http://www.beechnut.com/first_advantage/inside_pages/faqs.htm =====
Guest guest
Hi Carla My son had this problem when we first tried CLO a couple of years back. I stopped and read about preloading with Omega 6 and also reminded to give antioxidants with it Vit C and Vit E. When we tried again we did loading EPO first for 2 months then brought back the CLO, but he was bigger then and spat it out whatever I tried We use Eye Q now which has the EPO and Vit E already in with the fish oil. HTH Mandi in UK Quick question (a bit off topic but maybe someone here knows): > > > Before giving CLO should I make sure that I'm doing the Omega 6's 1st? I found that when I removed those things it stopped. My child had been getting Tang drink and also was using red flouride tooth rinse. I am not certain which was the culprit but something in one or both of those sure was. Michele

If it says it comes from fish oil, does that mean it also has D?? Also, in the past, I used all the other forms of vit.A. They work very well for my son. And btw, you are not ignorant don't worry about asking questions. Guest guest
Before we tried the GFCF diet we were told to use Salute Aloe Vera. Within a month, it gave my son direct eye contact for the first time since he was 2. His attention span also increased. (I don't know the details of how it works.) Now we are on the GFCF diet, nystatin for yeast control, and just started CLO 2 weeks ago. I can't say I have seen anything new to attribute to the CLO directly. However, 's speech has been steadily progressing since we started the diet in January. He is more aware of other people and wants to play with other children instead of just playing next to them. I'm considering starting chelation, but am not sure if I should wait for a test. will be 7 yo in June, so it's been years since his shots. My son has this visual issue if he eats a food/supplement he does not tolerate, or if he has a yeast issue. When those things are not present, his desire to do this is considerably lessened. It did not fully go away until after many rounds of chelation, so I believe he has metals in his eyes or the visual portion of his brain. He will still do visual things when he has those issues, but they are drastically reducing in severity. I am hopeful that once the metals are gone, his visual issues will be gone also. CLO has never helped him, but then he also does not tolerate it. I have also tried Twin Labs Allergy A, which he also did not tolerate. Guest guest
Did you have to force him to take it? That in itself might have caused the oppositional stuff, LOL. Peace, Kathy E. Guest guest
Also wondering if the peach flavoring is not tolerated, don't know...maybe a phenol food? If so giving no phenol with it might help. lapetitesirene99 <linda@...> wrote: I have no experience with this, but is he OK with flovourings? Guest guest
Actually this happened to me. I try everything before I give it to my son because he's fairly nonverbal. I took it for 3 days and by the 2nd day I was practically in a rage. I went through stop signs, yelled at everyone, etc. I have never had a reaction like that to any supplement. He could be allergic to it also, which can cause pretty aggressive behavior. When my kids act like that it is always something biological, regardless of what kind of a day they are having. Guest guest
Both of these also hugely irritated my son, but he does fine on Kirkman's unflavored CLO. Guest guest
How much did you give him? With my son I have to start ANY supplement very slowly. Most of supplements (and CLO as well) caused couple weeks of bad behavior initially. The most effective supplements usually caused the worst adjustment period. But that is with my son. Guest guest
FWIW, we tried on 2 separate occasions to give my 7 yo dd CLO. The first time we used Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil, orange flavor, liquid. The second time (several months later) we tried Nordic Naturals Omega 3 capsules, lemon flavor. Each time, my dd began to get short-tempered with a negative mood. Each time, we removed the fish oil, and were able to get back on track. I get wanting to try it again, because I've heard so many great things about supplementing with EFAs. But not right now. in Illinois
Guest guest
We have tried my son several different times on CLO (different brands, flavors, etc.) Each time we have used it he becomes a demon within hours. He will walk around and hit and kick anything or anyone in sight. A parent on another site mentioned that some kids that are unable to tolerate CLO are deficient in Taurine. We have been supplementing that for the past couple weeks and are just about ready to try the CLO again. Last time we started with 1/4 tsp and I think we are going to start even lower this time. > Have any of you had a whiny, defiant side affect from CLO? My son was horribly aggressive with any EFAs, including CLO, until I gave it with mito cocktail and amino acids, especially taurine.
