Basti-UP observed World AIDS Day 2008

 

Basti, 01 December. The Global Science Academy (GSA), Basti (UP) India, and the

District AIDS Control Society (DACS), Basti had organized a grand observance of

the World AIDS Day on the theme ˜Stop AIDS Keep the Promise: Take the Lead’

which included rally, debate and a thought provoking seminar.

The district administration, health department, National Cadet Corp. (NCC).

schools and colleges, intellectuals from GSA and its vast network of

stakeholders, and many others enthusiastically participated in this largest

gathering and made the event memorable for each and every one in the entire

city.

 

The preparation for the observance of the Day was started well in advance and

GSA had released advertisements and press releases in the leading news-papers

and websites to attract attention of public for their massive participation.

 

On the occasion, GSA had distributed World AIDS Day theme mentioned caps to

people from district administration, health officials, NGOs, intellectuals,

academicians, social workers and others to remind there role in the fight

against AIDS while all the rally participants were wear the same message

mentioned ribbons.

Moreover, the red ribbon campaign had highly emphasized in the event that could

be seen everywhere either on caps as distributed, on paper and fiber plates of

refreshment items as provided, IEC materials as developed/distributed,

certificates and shields as given to honor students of debate etc. in addition

to thousands of red ribbon as provided to each and everyone who had witnessed as

part of the observance and to many others.

 

A four kilometer rally for the entire city was flagged off by the District

Magistrate, Basti Ms. Roshan in which beside organizers teachers and

students of Indian Public School, SVM Senior Secondary School, Government Inter

College, Government Girls Inter College, NCC Cadets were taken multiple AIDS

awareness banners and cards, voice awareness with the aid of loudspeaker. Band

artists of GSA during the rally attracted curious attention of common people

which resulted in demand for IEC materials and thereby program organizers were

able to equip them with right information on the pandemic.

 

The GSA was able to provide many NGOs of its (GSA’s) ‘All India Networking

of NGO Clusters on HIV/AIDS Issues’ and others on a common platform.

 

In the afternoon a thought provoking seminar was organized by the Global Science

Academy (GSA) & DACS which was formally inaugurated by the Chief Medical Officer

(CMO), Basti and GSA Director Dr. Anil Pratap Singh by lighting candle before

Maa Saraswati iodole, followed by a Saraswati Vandana by students of Government

Girls College, the divine motto of which was having blessings of the goddess in

the sake of enriched human-knowledge  to cope the AIDS epidemic urgently and

efficiently and thereby save the human lives all over world.

 

A welcome song was sang by girl students for the Chief Guest of the seminar Sub-

District Magistrate (SDM) Dr. (Ms.) Sarika Mohan who along with CMO & GSA head

honored debate (essay/ panting) participants of different schools and colleges

by giving them shields and testimonials.

 

Dr. (Ms.) Sarika Mohan in her speech showed her concern over stigma and

discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS.

 

Admiring support of UNAIDS in World AIDS Campaign GSA head Dr. Anil Pratap Singh

had elaborated in detail regarding importance of the Red Ribbon, being the

international symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness, and said that wearing the red

ribbon was a sign of one’s commitment to stop the AIDS epidemic and  a

reminder of the work that still need to be done to fight HIV/AIDS.

He also said that the scientific community and professionals were taking their

marathon efforts to develop a safe, effective, accessible, preventive vaccine

for use throughout the world and GSA was making efforts to engage AIDS-vaccine

researchers and public organizations to strengthen AIDS vaccine research in

India.

 

Senior District Tuberculosis Officer (DTO) Dr. R.P.Singh, Dr. A.P.Singh, Chief

Medical Superintendent (CMS) Dr. V.K. Srivastava, academician and medical

conference organizer Dr. Anil Srivastava, Social worker Dr. I.S. Srivastava, Dr.

Jamal Ahmad of District T.B. Hospital , Dr. N.K. Singh, Dr. S.K.Srivastava, and

many others spoke on the occasion.

 

 All the targeted intervention staff of GSA’s anti-AIDS project along with

peer educators and the Self Help Group (SHG) members of sex-workers have

participated with their keen interest in the World AIDS Day event. Beside,

outlet centers under the project had distributed AIDS awareness materials and

condoms in the context of World AIDS Day observance.

 

On the occasion GSA also disclosed about a certificate course programme offered

by UNAIDS and IGNOU in ‘NGO Management’ and students were found more eager

to engage themselves in this course in the Prospectus of which GSA mentioned as

one of the core agencies of support.

 

From the IEC (Information Education Communication) Stall of GSA, during seminar

thousands of IEC materials were distributed amongst the gathered public.
