Guest guest
Hi Everyone I signed up with this group last night and feel a bit overwhelmed by all the info. Here are the few questions that I have. I am 51 year old female. I am about 80 to 85 pounds overweight and have Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis and autoimmune diseases. I am on Medicare (based on my autoimmune problems--Rheumatoid Arthritis and Sjogrens) with Medicaid as a supplement because my monthly income from SSD is low. I live in South Florida and go to The Clevland Clinic in Weston. My endochronologist and cardiologist referred me to the department that does gastric bypass. My appointment is on September 24th. I have done alot of reading and feel that the lap band is what I want. Will Medicare pay for this procedure and what do I have to do to notify them? Has anyone in this group had the lap band and if so, what has your experience been? Because of my Sjogrens I need to drink water during the day--will I be able to do so with the lap band? Well that's it for now--I know I will have more later. Glad to be a member of this group. Dana

Guest guest
Dana, welcome to the list. I don't know exactly what medicare's requirements are re lap band. You'll need to either check with medicare directly, or with a surgeon who takes medicare. For some insurances the lap band surgery is still considered experiemental. Also, there may be people at www.obesityhelp.com who have had experience with medicare who would respond there. It's a great site for resources. Even with RNY you will be able to drink water all day long. YOu might have to take it in slightly smaller quanitities at one time, but you will definitely need to drink it. Guest guest
Dana - Welcome to our group. Glad to have you with us. The lap band may be a very good choice for you. Not sure who is out there lurking that may have had it. Most of us have/ or will have the RNY. You will be able to and will have to drink water no matter what type of surgery you have. I don't know about Medicare and what it covers, but the Lap Band was only approved last year in the US, so it may not be covered yet. Good luck to you. Guest guest
I know several bands. Some who were done in 1991 in the first trials in the US. It's being done everywhere all over the world. It's been OK here for just over 1 yr. But I know many who went to Mexico to do it, and our local doc did their follow-up, fills & such. I am RNY. From my observations these years, I would not trade lives with a band person. Some would not trade with me. Each one has it's pluses & minuses. Yes, you can drink water with the band unless there is a mechanical flaw of some kind, as in the band eroding or some such. If you could not, you'd simply adjust the band more open til the water could flow. But that might compromise your wt loss. It SHOULD be tight enough to restrict, loose enough to allow normal hydration. New to Group Hi Everyone I signed up with this group last night and feel a bit overwhelmed by all the info. Guest guest
Good Luck Serenity!! Welcome to the group. Kim G. New to Group Hello Everyone, I just joined this group and wanted to say hello. I am still reading the book, just got it this Saturday. I am excited about starting the food plan because I am sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. I have a long way to go but I have a good friend who's been doing this plan for couple weeks and is very happy with it so I thought I would read up about it and I am so surprised at the attitude of the plan, it seems WONDERFUL. I am looking forward to a new me. Thanks for being here everyone, for without you I wouldn't be here.SerenityReminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat.
