Sue do you know where Newton Wellesley Hospital is?

Its at 2000 Washingston Street, Newton MA

The meeting is held ground floor of the Riddle (or Ridley can never

remember his name) building .. which is located behind/beside the hospital.

So when you turn in at the lights to the hospital (near the parking garage)

DON " T go park in the parking garage but drive past it and you'll see the

hospital on your right (surgery entrance) and the R building on your

left. Park BEHIND the R building (its free parking back there in the

evening - the parking gate/arm thingy will be up so you'll know) ..

Lyssa,

Thanks for the directions. It's too bad you can't be at the meeting-

I would like to meet you. Your list has been a great help to me.

Maura,

I am with Dr. Thayer. I actually saw him years ago, and my father saw

him

many times before Dr. Thayer specialized in the WLS. I did get to speak

with

him for a little bit after the meeting. That is when he told me that from

the

barium swallow that " I have a hiatal hernia the size of my handbag " . Can be

fixed during the surgery on 2/1/2000. A little nerve wracking starting my

surgery

out with a problem, but I will get there, I hope. Sally

Maura,

Dr. Thayer didn't mention anything about medication to reduce it now. Just

said he could fix it at the time of the surgery. This explains why I live on

Tums

for indigestion in spite of taking Prevacid for myBarrett's esophagus. It also

explains why it has been hard for radiologists to read recent chest x-rays.

FYI: Also get broths, and bouillions...bouillion will help prevent any

dizzy spells that may occur from limiting your intake, and don't forget

either SF Carnation Instant B-fast, or protein drinks, but watch the milk as

some may become lactose intolerant/sensitive.

Maura and all,

I hope that is the way it works, that the Wedding and the holidays will

sort of fly by and then THE day will come.

You've done well with buying some food. Do you feel it will be liquid the

first week or two, not pureed? What have others found immediately when you

come home after the surgery? Are you immediately pureeing? What are you

eating in the hospital? Are people really discharged in 2-3 days as Dr. Thayer

mentioned the other night? WOW, that seems fast. I know the insurance

companies do not want us in the hospital long, BUT...

I am excited for you,Maura. Your day is coming real soon. Sally

Sally, I just had my surgery Aug.28th so I am 2 weeks out tomorrow. I

went in for surgery on a Monday and I was released on Thurs.By Wed. I

had all the IV's out and the catheter. The give you Carnation Instant

Breakfast and some juice mixes and all the water you want. The third

day I got tomato soup and skim milk. In the hospital I really wasn't

that humgry. Since I have been home I like SF Jello, SF pops, CIB

with 1/4 banana, soup, mashed potato, applesauce, dannon light yogurt

and Irish oatmeal. I tried the baby food and all I can say is " ick "

no wonder my kids my faces when eating it. I also have coffee with

equal of course, Dr. Thayer said a cup or two is fine. I am walking

(just picked peaches in North Andover) and I feel better every day. I

have lost 20 lbs and am starting to see it in my clothes, its

exciting! Hope to see everyone at the Oct. Meeting. Barb

Sally,

I was at NWH for 3.5 days. They want you to eat pureed meat and veggies

before you can be released. It's wild. One day you're dying for ice chips,

and they won't give you any. The next day, they put a HUGE bowl of soup in

front of you! Food was the last thing I wanted at that point, but I managed

to get a few bites down (not as much as Dr. Thayer would have liked.)

At home, I started on CIB, sf popsicles, and s/f yogurt. I did start pureeing

immediately, and trying new things eat day. I found that I craved flavor, and

could never eat the same food twice for a LONG time.

That is really super. You are on your way. Best of luck to you, and
