Population Services International, Position Description: DIRECTOR PROGRAMS

Reports to: Country Programme Director

Supervises: Work in collaboration with Regional Directors (6)

Context

Population Services International (PSI) is a non-profit, Indian

Society, which began operations in 1988. It is affiliated with PSI in

Washington, DC, which has similar connection to organizations in 60

different countries (www.psi.org). PSI is dedicated to the

improvement of public health through promotion of products, services

and information, which empower people to protect them from

preventable diseases. PSI currently operates in 22 states with a full-

time and contract staff of 1200 persons.

Position Purpose

Director Programs will be responsible for providing strategic

leadership in designing, managing and implementing the operational

framework/systems for the smooth delivery of programs across regions

in India. In addition to this, s/he will be responsible for leading &

managing a program on Maternal Health & Family Planning, funded by a

Large Anonymous Donor (LAD) in USA. PSI India will receive $ 78

million over the next five years (starting July 2008) for the program

and the endeavour of the program will be to save lives and improve

the reproductive health of millions of women in India.

Key Objectives of the program include

1. Increasing the use of long term contraceptive methods,

specifically IUDs

2. Preventing post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) after delivery

3. Preventing disability and death from unsafe abortions

The program deliverables over the next five years include:

• Facilitate over 500,000 IUD insertions

• Protect a million pregnancy against PPH using Misoprostol as a

prophylaxis

• Facilitate 200,000 safe abortions using MA drugs

This program is being implemented by PSI worldwide in 14 countries

with funds from LAD and India has a 20% share. The focus of this

program will be in both on urban & rural areas. The exact geographies

for implementation of this program in India are still to be decided.

For the position of Director Programs, we are looking for individuals

with:

Education

Post-graduate degree in Public Health /General Management (with

extensive exposure to strategically managing and implementing large

projects/ programmes on the ground)

Qualifications

• Strong background in Public Health (preferably in

Maternal/Reproductive Health & Family Planning), with at least 12-15

years of experience in strategic design, management and

implementation of integrated development/public health projects.

• Strong operation management skills - which involve strategic

planning & management, research & development, financial management &

ability to create efficient systems/processes for the delivery of

projects on the ground.

• Leadership & ability to manage high performing teams across

multiple locations.

• Ability to network & build sustainable partnerships with multiple

stakeholders – be it internal or external constituents (public–

private players)

• Very strong written & verbal communication skills in English.

• High result orientation.
