Guest guest
I've been restricted from weight lifting the first year, but walking, riding my bike, and other low impact activities are ok with my nsg. Several of us here do a LOT of riding although there is a learning curve to learn how far you can go. I'm up to 15-20 miles per day on my bike and it feels great. Still trying to get back where I was, but it will take time. The after effects are better than what would happen by sitting on the couch. Your first stop MUST be your PCP or NSG. If they " approve " , I say go for it. Bike riding and light aerobics (stair climber, nordic track, etc.) have worked for me. Dave > Group, > I have questions on exercise. Guest guest
I am a believer in what doctor Mirkin recommends. He is a practicing physician who not only has a daily practice, but he also reads research papers, unlike many of the doctors I have worked with in the past. Exercise *********************************************** Dear Dr. Mirkin: Is it more healthful to exercise before you eat or after? Many studies show that exercising after you eat lowers high blood sugar levels far more effectively than exercising before you eat. A high rise in blood sugar after meals damages cells to increase risk for heart attacks, strokes and nerve damage such as dementia, blindness and deafness, even in people who are not diagnosed as being diabetic. In this study, 20 minutes of self- paced walking lowered blood sugar levels in diabetics more when done two hours after eating dinner than before eating. Exercising after fasting barely lowered their high blood sugar levels at all (Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, July 2009). Muscle contractions drive sugar into cells without needing much insulin. These people were out-of-shape diabetics who walked slowly and for only 20 minutes, two hours after meals. Longer and more intense exercise lowers insulin and sugar levels even more and would be even more beneficial in preventing disease and prolonging life. I recommend exercising both before AND after eating. To touch the sole of another human Being , is as close as you can get to Heaven on earth! So, touch Gently! Guest guest
that is good to know, I had been told it was best before, that is why I go to curves before dinner. Guest guest
I spilled water on the joy stick of my ShopRider electric wheelchair last week and I had to send the controller to a company that does repair. Man, was I spoiled?! It's going to take almost two weeks to get it back. The manual chair that I'm in now is extremely limiting, but I noticed today that my legs hurt so good! That's a sign that my muscles and nerves are communicating with each other. My arms look like I lift weights and hopefully my legs will follow suit. Exercise is a good thing regardless of what your doctor says (my first ex-neuro told me that I needed to save my strength---for what?). Don't over-do it though! Guest guest
    I'm glad that you're doing so well, both coping with the wheelchair problem and gaining more strength in parts of your body. Yes, exercise is crucial, even though it can be hard to accomplish with MS. I firmly believe in the adage, " use it or lose it " . It sounds like I have more mobility than you, so my recommendations probably won't help much. But you might want to look into a recumbent tricycle with hand pedals, or a regular recombent tricycle if you can use your legs. I have a friend who was diagnosed with MS about two years ago. He uses a regular upright bicycle with electric assist for help in climbing hills and keeping up with the rest of his family. I ride a recumbent trike; I can't keep up with my family (my husband just did a 200k ride yesterday) but I do errands, went to work, etc. on it.     S. Willson lost his legs in the '70s during a peace action in CA. I met him last year while he was cycling from Seattle to San Franciso on his recumbent to promote his book " Blood on the tracks " . There a photo of him on his handcycle in that book if you want to see one.  Ann Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised, or a little mistaken. Guest guest
The sentiment that people shouldn't exercise is 'old school', with 'newer' views being to do as much as you can without over doing it. I'd LOVE to go to the Heuga Center in CO, http://www.mscando.org/, and do their program there. I went to one of their Jumpstart programs shortly after I was Dx, and this is what they talked about, finding that fine line between doing the most you can, without over doing it. I try and frequent PT and get specific exercises for what's giving me the most weakness, which sometimes surprises me where they find weakness and what I think the trouble it. I went to a pwrchair for the majority of the time when I had my baby last year and THAT shot my mobility through the foot (so to say, LOL). I've been working my butt off to get it back and it's not coming along too bad, just slower than I'd like. PT in home got me so I could get out and about with my baby boy and then I worked on their exercises for some time until I realized I was still having to use the walker in home and having trouble with my cane on the rare occasion I'd go out with someone else without the baby stroller, which works pretty good as a walker. Started going to PT in town (which is a workout in and of itself!) and found out most of my walking trouble was due to hip weakness, who'd of thought. Anyway, I actually 'free walked' like 10 feet this weekend (just to see if I could) and didn't fall! Had to have my husband come walk me back to my chair though - we'd taken Cody out side and decided Cody, a 16 month old, and I walk at about the same ability level. lol > > I spilled water on the joy stick of my ShopRider electric wheelchair last week and I had to send the controller to a company that does repair. Guest guest
    I have an exercise machine like these too. Mine, an activcycle, came with straps that go over the pedal that hold the foot or hand in place. I can see why the straps would be needed. I suspect that if you went to a bike store you might be able to find straps that could be velcroed or screwed into the pedals to hold the foot in place.     A more expensive fix would be to buy new pedals at the bike store to replace the ones already on the exercise machine. One can buy pedals that have a metal piece that matches a metal plate on the bottom of one's shoes, so that one can clip one's shoes in place on the pedal. Serious bikers use these because feet won't stay over a certain speed. My husband and son, serious bikers, only wear shoes or sandals that have these clips when they're riding.  I'm a lot slower, so I can get away with a strap that holds my shoes in place when I go over a certain mph. Without those straps I'd have to be a lot slower than I already am.     I don't know a solution to the tendency of these small pedal machines to move when pedalled, except to brace the machine against something. Mine came with an anti-skid mat, but it doesn't work very well. It may be possible to buy such a mat that works better. I'd start by looking in a hardware store. There must be methods to keep machinery that tend to move while being operated in place.     Good luck to everyone, no matter what their preferred forms of exercise.  Ann Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised, or a little mistaken.
