Guest guest
Many years ago, I made a sick call on a woman whose young daughter was present at the scene. I don't even remember the nature of the call, just that it wasn't life-threatening and the woman recovered just fine. For at least 3-4 years after the call, everytime I saw the patient's daughter anywhere around town - grocery store, post office, on the street - she would run to me, give me the biggest hug she could manage, and thank me for taking care of her mother. I didn't even remember the patient's name, but I sure didn't tell that to this child. I just returned her hug and told her we were glad we had been able to help. More recently: A few months ago, we received several calls within about 2 weeks on the same man for the same complaint. He had a recently diagnosed health problem--in fact, it had only been diagnosed after the first call we made on him. Although the problem is very manageable, he was experiencing episodes of some new and (because they were new) frightening symptoms. The crew that made the third call realized that the main reason he had called was that he simply didn't understand his symptoms or how to manage them. In addition to doing the needed assessment and history, they took the time to reassure him, and to explain what was going on and how he could manage these episodes. That episode resolved while they were still on scene, and he refused transport. Within a week of that call, he had called our office, written a letter, and even come by the station to let us know how much he appreciated the crew taking the time to talk to him about his health problem and educate him so effectively. He had discussed the suggestions they had made with his doctor (as they had also suggested), their suggestions were working, and he wanted to make sure that we knew how grateful he was that they had not only provided him with the care that he needed that night, but had also eased his anxiety, helped him manage the problem, and saved him the expense of unnecessary ambulance rides and ER visits! Merry Christmas to all of you, and thanks for being who you are and doing what you do. I was approached by a gentleman who just wanted to let me know how much he appreciates what we do. He went on to explain that he wouldn't be here this Christmas if it wasn't for the highly trained Paramedics who saved his life...cpr save.. He stated that he knows that most people take what we do for granted and he just wanted to thank us all for the lives that we affect everyday. This man actually had tears as he was explaining this to me. > I am passing this on to everyone as the most sincerest thank you that I have ever received. This thanks is for you...whether your the field provider, the management or the instructors who have made this all possible. > > Merry Christmas, > Auanger, CCEMT-P > Hunt County EMS

Guest guest
Thanks all for the welcome, some good things to check into and I appreciate the suggestions. Also yes, I will for sure wait to really get into things when we are for certain that Rod has MS, but listening to the nurologist and his symptoms we both are pretty sure it's MS we are dealing with... thanks again for your help Holly
Guest guest
In an attempt to clarify my point of view … The word " disease " simply means an impairment of health or a state of abnormal functioning. In that respect, MS is a disease. However, it is probably not by an infectious disease. A person cannot " catch " MS like a person catches a cold or the flu. I think of MS as a condition which has developed, like an ingrown toe nail or an aneurism. I consider an MS diagnosis to be a descriptive diagnosis. In my opinion the name " Multiple Sclerosis " covers a list of symptoms and conditions that are commonly found together in the same individual. Calling a group of symptoms and conditions " Multiple Sclerosis " is a kind of shorthand doctors use so they do not have to keep repeating the same list of symptoms and conditions. Researchers have yet to identify an underlying cause for that list of commonly associated symptoms and conditions that have come to be called Multiple Sclerosis. Lyme disease has an identified cause – bacteria. Lyme disease is an infection. My Lyme-literate MD and I consider my experience of Multiple Sclerosis symptoms as the expression of or as the demonstration of the Lyme infection in my body. For some Lyme disease looks like and is misdiagnosed as MS. For others Lyme disease presents as and is misdiagnosed as Parkinson's, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, mental illness, etc. Not every case of Multiple Sclerosis has the Lyme disease bacteria as its root cause. Heavy metal poisoning and toxins (such as artificial sweeteners) can also trigger a collection of symptoms and conditions could be lumped under the heading Multiple Sclerosis. KC > > Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed as so called " MS " , CFS, and Fibromyalgia as well as other diseases. I was misdiagnosed as having MS almost six years ago now by a top neurologist and the result has been a lot of damage to my central nervous system. KC has stated this in the group: MS is or a disease per se it is a series of symptoms that have appeared and there is an explanation as to why they are occurring, not that you have I curable MS. I would run to have a specialized Lyme bacteria lab test...not one a neuro would order for example from Quest Labs. Igenex is a reputable lab. There are people with Lyme who have been cured. > > > > >
