I have a lot of experience with diabetes as I said, but the most experience I've ever had is having to help someone bring their sugar up from being too low. You have to give the person some sort of sugar, like orange juice or to eat something. What do you do if your sugar is too high though? Can drinking a glass of water help? That's the one thing I'm not real clear on is what to do for high sugars, can anyone help with this? Thanks so much, I'm already glad I joined this group. It's becoming very helpful, tha'ts for sure. Guest guest
Hi Carla, Welcome to the list! My name is Ruth and I've been a type 1 diabetic for 34 years. To answer some of your questions. First, The Prodigy Voice meter is the latest meter and yes the poker does have a seting for the depth it will poke. Second, I would suggest the Prodigy Voice meter because it will tell you when to put the blood into the strip as well your husband can operate it independently. Third, when trying to get the blood into the strip, it works like a straw, so when trying to get the blood, holding the machine straight up and down put the tip of the strip in the blood and the strip should suck up the blood. The Acuchek and the Prodigy meters work like this. If you are interested in getting a Prodigy Voice meter, phone Advanced Diabetic Solutions in Georgia. Their number is 1- extention 14. When I spoke to Maxi Aids the other day, they only had a Prodigy Auto Code, so try Advanced Diabetic Solutions and make sure you ask for a Prodigy Voice meter. If you need a copy of the manual in word, you can e-mail me at ruthhogue@... for one. Fourth, the only successful way to bring down sugars in a hurry is with insulin, but you need to be careful how much you give. For every 64 I'm over 180 I give a unit of humologue How much I will give also depends on when I will eat again, say for example at bedtime I might not use as much because it will be 8 hours before I eat again. Water will not bring down sugars. Exercise will also help to bring down blood sugar levels. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Doing an aerobic exercise is a good way to lower a high bs level. For instance walking for thirty minutes will lower my bs level about fifty to sixty points. Do you know how many bs points will drop when you walk for thirty minutes? one more sugar question Hey again, I forgot to post this question in my last email. Guest guest
Water can help to a certain degree, but he best is exercise. However, if the blood sugar is over 250 it is not recommended to exercise as the body may actually make your sugar go even higher. one more sugar question Hey again, I forgot to post this question in my last email. Guest guest
Hi Carla There is no " quick fix " for high sugar like there is for low. You just have to exercise more and eat fewer carbs and try to monitor your blood sugar to see what foods cause it to go up and then stay away from those foods. Monitoring regularly and watching what you eat and trying to exercise are the best ways to keep it in the normal range. Consistency as opposed to highs and lows is important. Guest guest
we haven't done anything like that yet, as he was just diagnosed friday afternoon. I am guessing that it will depend on how much activity the person does, and their body, as to how much points it will drop after exercising? Carla Kay Etheredge cketheredge@... Guest guest
Hello ruth, Wow, thank you for so much helpful information. I really appreciate it. Your description of getting the blood onto the strip was much better than what his doctor did. That would explain why we're getting error messages. I looked on MaxiAids and it shows that they do have one of these prodigy voice meters in stock now, but i will keep this other number handy. Wow, their is a lot to learn here, and a lot to process. we're kind of frustrated with his doctor, because he just came in, gave the diagnosis, and left things up to the nurse on how to show him, and she showed me more than him because I could see a little. He's considering another doctor anyways, but his manor wasn't the greatest. It's great to meet you. Carla Kay Etheredge cketheredge@... Guest guest
You guessed correctly. That is why it is important to know the specific exercise and its duration like walking for thirty minutes. All you would need do is to take a pre-exercise bs level, and take another bs level about a half hour or an hour so after the exercise has concluded. Do not eat or drink any food until the bs levels have been taken. It would be wise to conduct several of these experiments to get a better idea of just how many bs points will drop while doing a specific exercise for a specific duration. Guest guest
Hi Carla, unfortunately all doctors aren't sure how to deal with blind people, or other handicapps. I think we have to teach them, as nicely as possible, when we can. Today I was talking to my friend, a new and confused diabetic. She is slightly mentally handicapped, and was given a diet on paper and that was her education. She could not read it and didn't know what to do. I had her ccall her doctor and I was able to talk to them and tell them about the wonderful diabetes educators that helped me at the beginning. Where I expected to have a problem, the doctor said they hadn't hear of this at all and would I please sign her up and have them call the doctors office. wow, I was thrilled! Yes they do have diabetes educators in many towns and they are very helpful, at least the one I had, who allowed me one-on-one instruction rather than the usual class. If you have this and want to to it, it is a few sessions and very helpful. Vicki Breffe The LORD is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. Guest guest
Hi, Ruth. About 4 days ago, I got my Prodigy Voice from MaxiAids. It's a very good unit!
Guest guest
Hi Vicki, Yes, you are sure right. I think doctors aren't always as versed in dealing with handicapped or blind people. The best thing for us to do, is educate them. Maybe I'll let them know of the diabetic educators and the blind diabetic specialist here through our commission, and at least let them know that their are ways of dealing with this as a blind person. Nice to meet you. Carla Kay Etheredge cketheredge@... Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/prayingkitty MSN: cketheredge@...
