Guest guest
Dear FORUM, I just saw an advertisement in the news paper by DSACS advertising for a post of counselors, quoting the salary for a qualified counselor as Rs 6000 ot 10,000. This prompted me to write about something that I have felt for many yrs but have never said it. Dealing with medico social problem like HIV/AIDS, where person to person contact for BCC or counseling is the most crucial activity, to produce any impact, least budget is allocated for the salary of personnel's. The real agents of change are paid such meager salaries that no efficient or capable person would like to join the programme. We must understand that, whether it is an advocacy meeting, a BCC session or counseling session or a training programme or an event, Tea/Samosas or Lunch are not going to change the mindset of people. It is the person, conducting the programme, his intelligence his communication and convincing skills, that is going to influence the people and have an impact. If we want to raise the level of our prevention or care programmes and to achieve better results it is important that we allocate more funds for the salary, employ more efficient and able people and make them more accountable and the outcome ( in reality not only on paper) will improve many folds.
