Guest guest Posted December 4, 2001 Report Share Posted December 4, 2001 Kaitlin - I think the first thing you might want to do is go the WW website (www.weightwatchers.com) and read about the program. You don't have to attend meetings - some of us are doing the At Home Program or the Online Program. We do have weight ranges and some other tools in our files that will help you. In a nutshell, weight ranges are assigned a range of points to eat within everyday. You can eat whatever you want as long as it falls within your points range. You also need to drink at least 48oz of water everyday - but more is better, especially at first. It really helps to flush away fat and toxins in your body!! You should have at least 5 servings of fruit and veggies and 3 servings of milk. If you're not a milk drinker you can sub calcium chews. Points are derived from calories, fat, and fiber. While we do have calculators to download I think it's important that you get info from WW and learn about the system. The WW At Home program is $99 (which can be broken into three payments) and you get all the weekly books, the complete point book and dining out guide, sliders, hand held calculator, recipe cards, magazine, a box of 2 point bars and a carrying case. I think it's well worth the investment and you'll understand how the program works better than if you try to wing it. You could also go to meetings but the two big books and the hand held calculator are extra from your sign-up fee and weekly dues. I hope that helps a little!! LOL That reminds me of a little habit I tend to fall back into all the time where I skip eating the real foods I like for fear of getting fat and instead eat mounds and mounds of salad for dinner....which is STILL overeating. I get where I have to cut salads out for a while because I find I'm using them in the wrong way- not as a healthy part of a meal but a binge in disguise. WW What's so funny is that my doctor can't say enough about Weight Watchers. I am on a diet - i am eating the diet i want. I think it depends how you use the word. Just like bitch. If bitch means a strong outsoken women then by all means I am a bitch. IF diet means i write down what i eat so i am aware of what i eat then by all means i am on a diet. but diet also means what you eat. dogs eat a certain diet made for dogs. the word is what is the problem and the connotation it has. However the inferred meaning in the 'western' world = RESTRICTIVE eating, usually for weight 'maintainence' purposes. So what trips us up is the mix up between eating and the socially accepted 'limits' produced on ourselves. It's just laziness that with language that we went from 'weight loss diet' to just calling it a diet. In my world there is a thing called SAD - standard american diet. I think I used the word diet here to mean the way we eat. I have the books, I went to a few meetings, moneywise, I couldn't keep it up. I didn't like public weigh-ins. So, I won't spend the money on it. For low-fat, I like the recipes that ediets.com sends out daily with little ingredients. I did buy a book written by a man who lost 100 lbs. by himself, and it did have some good advice in it. I eat whatever I want, and have gotten more active, and have lost inches and weight. I can't do anything as structured at Weight Watchers. Figuring the points, etc. God Bless and Take care. Some of us may recognize 'diet' as simply what we eat, the word used in it's straightforward sense, but the connotation and the emotional pull of what popular culture imposes on us (and we have allowed) with that word create a pretty powerful emotional punch. nice rant! Then, healthwise, I know how many grams of fat I am taking into my body and calories, etc. That was the second part of the beginning to lose weight. When I get home tonight, I will write down what I have ingested for the day, so that I can keep track. Writing it down isn't a diet, although a book I read by Rob Brinkman gave me many tips on losing weight healthy and it is working well. He has a website and I still eat whatever I want in moderation. So, between this site and that book, I am feeling better. I am not on a diet, though. I just try to eat healthy most of the time to feel good, and take care of myself. ----and if, I want that $6.00 Guacamole Burger and don't feel like finishing it, I share it with a friend. I can't eat the whole thing anyway. --- and, I did eat a Grilled Chicken Burrito(during the course of the day), had it made exactly the way I wanted it, and enjoyed it. The fat grams(gasp), but, I gave myself persmission to eat it, and won't be having one every day. I try to rarely eat fast food. ---- Just what works for me. God Bless and Take care.
