Guest guest
Hi Amy, How wise of you to plan ahead. You might want to consider treatment for your hypo, or at least have your thyroid levels carefully monitored. Recent studies show that maternal hypothyroidism can affect the fetus, because in the first few months the fetus depends on maternal thyroid hormone. After about 11-12 weeks the fetus can make its own hormone. Normally in the first trimester of pregnancy, patients experience increased thyroid hormone production, because one of the hormones that's elevated in pregnancy, B-HCG acts much like TSH. So your levels could naturally even out. But then during the last two trimesters, thyroid hormone production decreases, and that's when people who are on thyroid replacement often need to have their meds decreased. About 5-6% of normal women develop post-partum hyperthyroidism, either transient thyroiditis or Graves' disease. So you pretty much want to be routinely monitored before, during and after your pregnancy. If you're in tune with your body, you'll notice symptoms before your blood levels change. If you watch out for symptoms of hypo or hyperT and are monitored regularly, you should be fine. There are several women on board who will undoubtedly share their success stories. Best to you, Elaine
Guest guest
I will definitely push to be monitored closely. I'm one of those people that can feel any change. They wont treat hypo just because it isn't hypo enough. Thats interesting about the last two trimesters! I'll definitely discuss all of this with my doc. Thanks again! Guest guest
Hi Amy, Good luck to you and hubby! There are some endo's out there who will treat the hypo even when many drs. don't think your hypo enough. My current endo knows that graves patients need to be a little in the hyper range (using TSH levels)to feel good. Hopefully your gyn will work with you on this, and think about using the about.coms thyroid dr. find for your area. Drs. are recommended by patients and their experiences and you can look by state. That is how I found mine. Take care, Jody _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
