Jo-Ann,

I saw on TLC or Discovery they can actually do surgery for spina

bifida while the baby is in the womb. It was amazing. I am sure it is

only certain cases but wow, technology is truly coming a long way!

delivery. Because the spinal cord is exposed and can very easily be

further damaged by the trauma of a natural birth, it is important to

know. From what I have read and seen, if the baby is born by c-

section (the dr's are very careful when they are going in to get the

baby) and is immediately treated for infection (because of the open

tissue) and has surgery within a few days of birth (depending on the

extent of the problem), they baby has a very good chance of minimal

damage to the spinal cord. And therefore a much better chance of a

normal life. I just thought I would pass that on.

,

Now that you say that, I remember my dr actually mentioned that they

just recently had to give someone the option of flying to California

to have a surgery (she didn't say what for) while the baby was still

in the womb and of course the parents choose to and it was

successful. Is that absolutely amazing?!
