Marie,

In the back of my mind I remember something about a book/web site that

is for IE and children. Sorry I don't have a link to give you, but

perhaps a Goggle search could help?

And instead of all the WW stuff, I would simply give the girl an easy

book like Overcoming Overeating. In fact I would recommend that mother

and daughter read it together! You don't have to be a 'master' of IE

to recommend it, let those that have done it and written well about it

do that for you. And I would welcome a 12 year old girl here too. All

she has to be is mature enough to be willing to be open about what she

wants to achieve and not be intimidated by all us 'adults'. Heck I

wish I had 'gotten' this when I was 12!! Think of all the years of

doing and being 'wrong' that could have been avoided.

Best to all involved and good for you to try and help them as well. -

That is so so sad - the last thing that poor kid needs is a diet. As a former child who was put on many diets by my parents, I am sad for her , knowing the isolation and shame and deprivation she faces. It sounds like she's already been dealing with enough crap.

Could you just be honest and tell her you reacted without thinking and that you had some other ways to think about this issue? I don't think you need to have "success under your belt", per se, as much as an adequate grasp of the information. Maybe recommend Overcoming Overeating and or/ Intuitive Eating and hope that her parents take the time to explore them as well.

That's really the best you can do I think - they will either pay attention or discount the info and go the usual route. As you know, IE can be a hard sell for someone who has the diet "head set". It's great that this young girl has such an ally in you - I really feel for you having to witness this! I hope you can make some headway, but again, there's only so much you can do!

Poor kid! :(

Are you thinking of " Naturally Thin Kids: How To Protect Your Kids

from Obesity and Eating Disorders for Life " by Antonello

(Paperback - Mar 15, 2006)

One that might help is called " Preventing Childhood Eating Problems "

by Jane R. Hirschmann and Lela Zaphiropoulos. It has certainly changed

how we think about feeding our kids. You can get a cheap copy for just

a few dollars from Amazon Used or eBay.

Great advice. Thank you. I think she will start becoming more active

and stressing fruits and vegetables. I shared with her that my

daughter heard a news story once when she was five and the story

basically said that if you eat enough fruit, you don't have to worry

about vegetables. After that, she started eating fruit for snacks on

her own(she didn't like veggies) and over time she seeks out fresh

veggies, too.

Marie, Gillian,

I too have heard good things about Ellyn Satter's books and other

resources from a number of people - you could check out her approach

on www.ellynsatter.com.
