Guest guest
Trina, have you checked out the Me List (ABA list like GFCFkids)? I just posted the address in another message, but here it is again: <A HREF= " http://php.iupui.edu/~rallen/me_list.html " >http://php.iupui.edu/~rall en/me_list.html</A> It is an unbelievably good resource for questions like this. Tons of other parents who have done everything under the sun related to teaching our kids, all sharing info. - Becky B.
Guest guest
Many times through swim clubs or park district clubs, you can hire someone privately on the side. My niece gives private lessons to children. She also teaches swim lessons through a local club. Also, check with you local autistic chapter and see if they have any info. There is a place where I live that teaches special needs children, and I will be signing my son up for swim lessons. Check with any of your local special needs services. a > Hey there, > > My son is 6, going on 7, and loves to go to the pool. I still put one of those swim vests on him and he just pedals around in the water, independent. He loves it. But, he is getting too old and heavy to wear the little vests and needs to learn to swim. We do ABA and have been able to teach everything else in the ABA manner. I contemplated sending him to private YMCA lessons, but I just know he will not pay attention to them, and they will not have a clue how to teach him. > > What have others done? Guest guest
Mikey is 6, and we have a subdivision pool we live at. From the time he was 2, I couldn't keep him out of the deep end. I think he just loves the sensation of water around him. He can lay in the bathtube forever submerged. At that pool I stopped putting the vest on him, and all the kids would just know to get Mikey out until he jumped right in again. last year , at 5, by watching his sister, and whatever, he swims under water, treads water, and floats on his back. Of course he drinks alot of pool water. He has always loved going underwater, so I think he just started moving arms and legs, and liked what happened. also, last year I can remembersaying 1,2,3,swim and then pushing him a short distance to the end of the pool, and increasing the distance. He's better than me, I do not go under water. > >Reply-To: GFCFKidsegroups >To: " sunrise " , " secretin-talk list " ><secretin-talkonelist>, " secretin support " ><secretin-supportonelist>, " secretin discussion " ><secretin-discussionegroups>, " NIDS " <NIDSonelist>, " melist " >, " GFCF " ><GFCFKidsegroups>, " FEATLIST " , " autism >support " <autismsupportonelist>, " autism list " >, " autism awareness " ><autism-awareness-actionegroups> >Subject: teaching autistic kids to swim >Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2000 17:17:06 -0500 > >Hey there, > >My son is 6, going on 7, and loves to go to the pool.
