Guest guest
So sorry to hear about that. Bless her heart. Did her mother have a thyroid problem while she was pregnant? I'm relatively new on the list, so forgive me if the background has already been discussed. Did they mention whether they thought it was thyroid or pituitary or adrenal? Holly Question about GD and babies My niece has just been labled failure to thrive. She hasn't grown since she was 6 months. Now she is 10 months and 14 lbs. She has gained a little lost a little over the last 4 months. They measured her head and everything. Anyway. They checked her thyroid...not sure what they did but i imagine it was just a tsh nothing more. They are refering her to an endo on the 13th. Are the symptoms the same in babies as adults? She goes through periods of sleeping a lot. She is very constipated. Shes a pretty fussy baby altogether. Anyway, thanks for any thoughts you have. Since it runs in our family everyone is kind of worried about her. Guest guest
All they did was a basic thyroid and chem panel. So they haven't checked anything further. Her mom has never been tested but is my sister and I have GD. My mom is hypothyroid (probably had GD younger but was on meds for it). I've bugged all my sisters to get tested for it. Especially the one who is 5'9 and 120 lbs. Amy
Guest guest
Oh yeah. MAKE them get tested. My mother had GD and I've been tested every year since. Because of that, mine was caught early which saved my body a whole lot of wear and tear! Do your sisters realize the full extent of what a thyroid imbalance does to your body? Not to mention your mind! It takes so little to just have them draw a vial of blood each year and check the thyroid. Most people should be getting basic tests like cholesterol done every year anyway, and I think a basic thyroid profile is commonplace if you go in for a physical. Guest guest
Amy, I am not sure if the symptoms are the same as in adults we have several different hormones at levels that are not usually found in babies. I would really hope your sister or brother do not allow them to do RAI on her! At Buffalo Childrens Hospital in Buffalo, NY they do use the BRT (block and replace therapy) on children, but I do not know of the age group. Go to www.google.com and put in " graves diease in children " and see what comes up...make sure to use the " " marks to narrow your search. Good luck and prayers for this little one! Guest guest
Hi again Amy, And are your sisters responding with " just because YOU have graves doesn't mean I have it? " ...that is my little sisters response all the time, and she is showing definite signs of GD. Guest guest
Hi Amy, Three of my brothers also seem hypo; they have high cholesterol levels are overweight and have been surgically treated for sleep apnea, all typical hypo symptoms. But their doctors haven't tested them for thyroid antibodies. My other bro has had extreme exopthalmos for years that allegedly wasn't thyroid related. Until he had a heart attack, his doc insisted he couldn't have a thyroid problem. Now they say both problems are from GD.
Guest guest
Well, one of my sisters is finally get tested since my mom was hypo and got meds. I believe she is hypo. My other sisters just think that since they dont have symptoms they dont have it. I try to convince them, but its like talking to a brick wall. I always tell them, just have the antibodies and tsh run if nothing else. They were all around me when I went hyper so they look at the symptoms as the disease. They dont realize that the years before it I had it but it just wasn't affecting my thyroid yet. All the migranes, nose bleeds, everything. Maybe its why i'm so small compared to them. Who knows. I'll definitely keep pushing them though. Amy > Hi again Amy, > And are your sisters responding with " just because YOU have graves doesn't > mean I have it? Guest guest
I agree with Holly so much here, a thyroid panel should be required at each and every yearly checkup for everyone. Maybe catching thyroid disease of any kind early can save a lot of people a lot of aggravations! Guest guest
Hi Jody, My brothers were tested for T4 years ago, and since they are overweight their docs made it seem as if they were asking for the test because they were looking for an excuse for the overweight. Over the years, they've had surgery for sleep apnea, been giving breathing machines to use at night, and put on cholesterol lowering meds. Given the way people are sometimes made to feel when they suggest they might have a thyroid problem, I can see why they don't pursue this line of thought. After my bro's heart surgery and problems with atrial fibrillation they diagnosed him with hyperthyroidism. Then they decided his exophthalmos was after all from GO. Years ago they measured his eyes and decided they were in the normal range so they never pursued it. I think this shows how you really need to be assertive and involved to get proper medical care. Guest guest
Elaine, I didn't know one of your brothers has been diagnosed with GD! Will this encourage your other brothers to now have antibody testing?
