Guest guest
I totally agree with this. Thank you, Katcha! Yes, fat acceptance is absolutely what I want. Why? Because I am fat, and I will never have a normal relationship with myself if I can't ACCEPT myself. I do know that my health is suffering right now. This is not because of my fat, or because I am fat. (PLEASE read kateharding.net for more on this!) It is because I am malnourished. I came (back) to IE after 2 months on a starvation diet and a few more months on a "healthier" diet that was still too low in calories and essential building blocks to provide for my body's needs. After I returned to IE, I gained 20 pounds, nearly overnight. I appear to be still gaining. Is this normal for me? I am absolutely sure it is not normal for anyone. Am I at my natural weight now? I have no idea, since I have not spent very much total time as an adult without being on a diet or being pregnant/nursing. I estimate that it will take at least a 1:1 ratio of time on "perfect" IE to the time I spent dieting in order to right the wrongs in my body. Since no one is perfect, I have revised that to 2:1. This means that I will need to practice IE without dieting for a total of approximately 30 years in order to normalize my body and POSSIBLY lose weight. LOL! OK, so this might be a silly estimate, but I am enjoying myself and healing myself. And 30 years is a long time to hate myself because someone thinks there is something wrong with fat acceptance. Re: still searching.... Deb,I can very much relate to your 'secret goal' - ohhh would I LOVE to beable to RUB IE into the faces of my medical people as well as fewother people I know who seem to snicker when I talk aboutnon/un-dieting (aka IE or Normal eating). However, I do know that thatis as false a guide as weighing myself so I try to re-focus mythoughts and efforts towards IE for ME instead of what the rest of theworld thinks and does. Yes, healthy at any size is what I want and I believe so does mostpeople at this site. Part of that may require some 'fat acceptance' asa tool to go forth with the other steps of reacquainting with one'sself with body hunger etc. What I have found too is that when I readsomething and it really gets to me, its usually because its what Ineed to work on myself!Glad to hear that you are hanging in with us as well as sharing yourtrue feelings too. That is very excellent work on your part!Katcha>> Dear Group,> I am not totally sure where this topic started but it hits home forme as my own "secret goal" is to have people notice that I have lostweight and when they ask how, I will say "by not dieting"! Especiallywhen I can say this to the chronic dieters that I know.> > Although I perceived this to be intuitive eating and rejecting thediet mentality, is it really? Isn't it just the same thing that Ihave always worked toward-being slimmer and other noticing that I amslimmer.> Jeez this is frustrating to me. > > As I read messages from everyone on the daily digest what I tend topick up more is almost a 'fat acceptance' mentality and don't thinkthat is where we want to be either. > > I think each of us has a healthy weight that relates more to bloodpressure, cholesterol, heart issues and mobility rather than size andI hope we can all strive for that goal together.> Highest Regards to All,> Deb> Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Guest guest
I think there is a HUGE difference between fat acceptance and self acceptance. You are 100% correct that self acceptance is the first step in IE and stopping dieting. Feeling that you are a worthy, loveable, sexy, attractive, intelligent person no matter what you weigh, no matter what you eat, no matter what you look like is self acceptance. Feeling good about your physical appearance when you are overweight is fat acceptance. My thinking is this. There is a person inside of you that it completely independent of how you look. That person was there when you were a child, and will be there when you are an old person. The physical body changes dramatically over time but the self does not. That self, the unchangeable one, is the one who needs your love and acceptance. One of the foundations of IE is loving that person, regardless of what it looks like. You can love yourself and not love your fat. Or, you can love yourself and love your fat. But you HAVE to love your self. Guest guest
This does make a lot of sense. I’ve been thinking about body acceptance a lot, because of IE and also because I am starting to see signs of aging on my body and honestly, it is freaking me out a little. Sometimes I feel bombarded by our “fix yourself” culture with plastic surgery, hair dye, wrinkle cream…I see how very important self acceptance it, and how difficult it is to block out the extraneous voices. It is also amazing to me how men (tv, Hollywood) are even subjected now to our youth culture-aging rock stars getting plastic surgery!!!! I’ve always wondered if part of the appeal of The Office tv show is the fact that a lot of the people on the show look like NORMAL people of all sizes, shapes, colors. Just rambling here…. Guest guest
I love The Office . I like the humour, but I do also like that the people are just 'regular' looking. That is one of the things we miss about UK TV - it's full of 'regular' looking people. Guest guest
Traci, I really like how you said this. I've been searching for exactly how to say exactly what you have just done. I think you are right on! I happen to Love myself and the person I am, but I don't love my fat. Guest guest
I love The Office too!! I was going to say I don't like some of the comments that makes to Phylis, and Stan (the overweight characters) but he makes rude comments to all of the employees! He's an equal opportunity discriminator. Dwight is my favourite character and I love it when Jim and Pam play tricks on him. iv_adb wrote: I love The Office . Guest guest
Oh I agree, he is an equal opportunity discriminator! I also think it is one of a few shows I can think of that doesn’t plant the idea that overweight=goofball character. I really liked Extras on HBO as well and have a soft spot for UK humor. I’ve never watched the original Office. Can’t wait for it to come back on! I laughed out loud when I read this - because in fact the overweight people on the show are very clearly sensible - and the goofball is him
