Guest guest
Both Eves and Days off... :-) And, as far as how many of them I've had off over the course of my career, I can barely remember yesterday... How many of you have to work the holidays coming up? For us, the labor agreement gives us Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day. Last year was the first time in over 30 years that I was entirely off on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but I had to go in on New Years Eve and New Years Day. This year it is the opposite for me. We are on 12 hour shifts with me working days, 7 to 7, except for a rare night. I had to work Thanksgiving Day too, just as I have every year going back to 1975. Guest guest
Back when I was working dispatch, I was single.. I worked when scheduled on the holidays, and many times volunteered to work if someone with family wanted off.. This was before they were strict on overtime.. No special pay for working holidays back then and in you worked the holiday, you received a " comp " day in return.. It worked well for me.. I saved the " comp " days, and would tie them with my days off and be off three or four days at a time. Weintraut
Guest guest
I have to work 2nd shift (3p-11p) on Christmas Eve. 7p-7a on Christmas Day (which is the most time off during the actual " day " of Christmas Day I've had in 10 years). I have to work 2nd shift New Years Eve and 3rd Shift New Years day. I had to work 2nd shift Thanksgiving, and 3rd shift the night before - so I really didn't have a Thanksgiving. In fact, I've pretty well worked 2nd shift every Thanksgiving for the past 10 years. Eventually, my rotation will come around so I'll have a holiday off at some point. Next year I have Christmas Eve off. I think I have Christmas Day off in 2010 (assuming my rotation stays the same). --Kev 911:: How many of you have to work the holidays coming up? For us, the labor > agreement gives us Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years > Day. What's a holiday? Holidays are some of the busiest times for us and I'm understaffed, so I work most holidays. I'm single with no kids, so I usually try to take the 0700-1500 shift on Christmas so other can do the Christmas morning thing with their family (we only have one radio operator on duty at a time). Guest guest
Hi all..... Yes I will be serving the public both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day..... this is nothing new for me... I will be working days, 7-3, it appears...normally I am off on Thursday and Friday.... but... we are soooooo short handed this year.... turnover has been awful.... my regular shift if 3-11. Just had my 10 year anniversary on the 7th ...wooo hooo...... I am very proud to be able to work... both for my agency and the public....I have no children... so that gives others to be with their family. I also worked Thanksgiving day and day after..... I hope each of you...have a safe and Merry Christmas..... Guest guest
The most memorable holiday season I ever had was back in 1980/81. We were working 8 hour shifts in those days with four full time and one part timer who was a full time borough employee. Because of vacation and sickness (one with a doctor's note the other questionable one day at a time), I worked a minimum 12 hours a day from December 24th to January 2, at least 4 days doing double shifts (16 hours) including New Years Day.
