Time and a half if you are scheduled to work on the holiday.

Double time if you are called in on your scheduled holiday off.

Also double time if you work over your scheduled shift on the holiday.

We don't have comp days.

Another question, how are you compensated for working holidays?

Before I started in 1975 and continuing until last month, if we worked on a

holiday we were paid doubletime in addition to the straight time. The reason

being that that our contract is the same as for our public works and utilities

(electric, water, sewer) as they get paid for the day off and are compensated at

the doubletime rate if they are called out on a holiday.

Seems that in our new contract the town snuck it in that in our case if we are

regularly scheduled to work on a holiday we now only get paid another 13 hours

straight time or we can take a comp day off which then has to be covered by

somebody at the time and a half rate. If we are scheduled off on a holiday, we

get to take another day off which also has to be covered by somebody else on

overtime. Now nobody wants to work the holiday with some threatening to be sick.

The holidays we get are New Years Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial

Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, General Eelection Day, Veterans Day,

Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years

Eve.

Once upon a time, we were essentially paid doubletime: we were paid 8 hours

for the holiday and 8 hours for the shift we worked. Now we are given

holiday comp days to take further down the line. I much preferred the older

method of compensation...

" Back in my day " it was double time and a half (time + time and a

half) for working a holiday. You got the straight time as pay and you

could take the time+½ as either money or time on the books to take

later. Unless the overtime budged was tapped out, in which case you

had to take the time.

If a holiday was on your regular scheduled day off, you got an extra

day off that pay period.

But that was back in the days of silent radio. It might be different

now with deficit budgets and FLSA and all.

Currently their 13 holidays are New Years Day, Luther King Jr

Birthday, Birthington's Washday, Cesar Chavez' Birthday,

Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day,

Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving ( " Turkey Sandwich Day " ),

Christmas Day, and one " floating " holiday per year.

I srtarted my 35th year in November. Back then if any holiday was our regular

day of work, we had to work it. If we were able to get off we were paid just

regular straight time holiday pay. If we worked it, we got our regular 8hrs pay

and a day off (8hrs w/pay to celebrate it as a day off sometime during the

year). About 18 years ago for only special holidays like Xmas, Thanksgiving, NY

day, Labor Day, Memorial Day & July 4th, it was changed so we received our 8hrs

regular pay, 8hrs overtime straighttime and 8hrs Comp time to take our holiday

later in the year. Within the last 5 years, this was changed (union) to include

all city celebrated holidays, which then included Xmas Eve Day/New Years

Eve/Good Friday. So for all holidays we receive the 8hrs regular pay, 8hrs

overtime straighttime and 8hrs comp time. When it changed to any holidays

receiving this type of compensation, we never really had a problem filling

holiday hours. In that time I I can recall two occasions when someone was sick

on Xmas and we had to find someone to work. One of which was myself as my son

decided to come two weeks before his due date. Dispatchers do still ask off on

holidays but again we always have people waiting in the wings willing to snap up

the hours because of the holiday pay (I am also working two double shifts Xmas

eve-16hrs) If you happen to be off as a regular day off when it is a holiday,

then you also receive the 8hrs holiday pay. Our parttimers receive the same

benefit of holiday pay as above but it is prorated based on the number of hours

they work the year before. I work any holidays hours I can get my hands on.

in Wisconsin P.S. Right now it is -3 degrees outside. Winds are gusting

at about 40mph and we have about 38 inches of * & (^ snow just in the month

of December. I could 32 degrees right now. It would feel like a heat wave.
