N. Arya, at a press conference on Post Exposer Prophylaxis (PEP) organized by International Health Organization (RATNEI) in Patna on Sunday, underplayed the risk of contracting AIDS virus by health officials while treating HIV/AIDS patients."We are getting 10-15 HIV patients each week. This is alarming but we must treat them without any fear or apprehension. The chances of contracting AIDS virus are extremely unlikely particularly if the physicians and other health officials used the universal safety kit as recommended," Dr. Arya said.Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi, the Medical Director of the IHO, said if accidentally pierced by an HIV-infected intravenous needle, as long as the PEP drugs were taken within six hours of the accident, the chance of getting infected is reduced by as much as 80%."In contrast, if jabbed by HIV-B virus, the PEP drugs could reduce the chance of being infected by 30 to 50%," Dr. Tejaswi said.Among others to speak on the occasion included noted surgeon Dr. Narendra Prasad, Dr. Shanti Rai, Dr. K.
