Hi Joyce,

I have been diabetic for 34 years and over that time I have seen many sugar

substitutes come and go, all with the dire warnings. Well, I'm still

living. The key is moderation just as with anything else. A diet pop once

a day or once in a while won't kill you.Remember, they fed those rats more

substitute than you or I will eat in a lifetime. This all being relative to

their size. I personally like the Splenda better because of the taste but

will eat both aspartame or Splenda. As for the water, that is a more

important thing. You should absolutely drink as much water as you can and a

little lemon or lime juice in it is okay. The reason is because a

diabetic's blood is stickier than a non-diabetic's, making it easier to clot

and have a stroke and you know as diabetics we are more prone to strokes.

That is what happened to me. I was dehydrated from not drinking enough

water and had a stroke. The extra water is also good for flushing out your

kidneys and other organs and body systems. So, Drink your water!!

I fill up my water bottle at the office water cooler when I arrive at work.

I have a 20-ounce bottle and I fill it three times during the work day. As

long as the water is cold I can drink it. I do drink unsweetened iced tea

quite a bit and of course I drink two cups of coffee, usually decaffeinated

every morning. Occasionally I drink a diet soda. I like Splenda and have

learned to cook with it. For the holidays I made a pumpkin pie with Splenda

which was quite delicious. Ruth thanks for you helpful suggestions. I can

use Equal occasionally but Splenda is still my sugar substitute of choice.
