The Title Soldier

by SFC Lincoln Gettes (Ret.)

A Soldier is a roughneck, you hear most people say,

He is an outcast of this world and always in the way,

I will admit there are many bad ones, from the Army to the Marines,

But you will find the majority the most worthy you'll ever see.

Most people condemn a soldier when he takes a drink or two

But does a soldier condemn you when you stop to take a few?

Do not scorn a soldier, but clasp him by his hands,

Because the uniform that a soldier wears means protection to your land.

When a soldier goes to battle you cheer him on his way,

You say he is a hero when in his grave he lays,

But the hardest battle of a soldier is fought in the time of peace,

When people mark and scorn him and treat him like a beast.

With these few lines I hope I don't offend, but remember,

When ever you meet a soldier, you will always meet a friend.

SFC Lincoln Gettes, (Ret.) Served 1941- 1963 U.S. Army
