Guest guest
Jeannie, I've just read your post regarding your visit with your sons pediatric neurologist's nurse practitioner, and my blood is boiling! Not only is this woman close-minded, but a little behind the times, too. When my son was diagnosed with Autism/PDD at 4 years of age, we were told to go home (180 miles) and get counseling so we could accept the fact that there was nothing they could do for my child. I went home and accepted the fact there was nothing they were willing to try, but I've never accepted the fact that I can't help my child. (and, no I never got the counseling...) I grieve constantly, too......at the insensitivity of people, the close-minded ideas that cause parents to feel helpless, and for the many parents who aren't able to help their children because they've never gotten the information or support to help carry their hopes and ideas forward. In spite of all this, I just keep trudging along, and in the process my child has improved a hundred times over. I know there are hundreds of other parents out there who will attest to the benefits they've seen with the GFCF diet, but there are a couple of other points you mentioned in your post where she's dead wrong, too.....at least regarding my child. The GFCF diet: We originally put our son on a diet prescribed by a naturopathic doctor. It had nothing to do with the GFCF diet, but alot of grains were taken out of his diet including wheat, oats, rye and barley. We saw dramatic changes (and withdrawal!), but when I did learn about the GFCF diet, I knew there was something to it and we immediately went GF. He started sleeping for the first time in years, his appetite and variety of foods he would eat improved tremendously, tantrumming and behavior problems greatly diminished. Overall, he was a much happier child. A couple of years later (after attending a DAN Conference) I took him off dairy, too. Guess what? An immediate stop to his chronic, one-right-after-the-other ear and sinus infections! They've never been much of a problem since. The Secretin " phase " : We're still in this phase, too, and have never been better ). My son has been receiving Ferring Secretin injections for 18 months. (And he was 9.5 years old when we started!) We saw immediate and drastic changes, including no more diarrhea, comprehension and expressive language exploded, better articulation, a big improvement in motor skills, he was much calmer, and showing much more age appropriate behavior and maturity. I can only hope that each child would see such great results, but mine has and continues to do so. There is no doctor or scientist in this world who will convince me that it doesn't work for some kids.....I'm living with the proof. Trouble for nothing: My kind pediatrician (and parent to an adult disabled daughter) once told me to never let anyone put my child " in a box " and tell you what they can or can't do, and never to give up on helping my son to improve his life. He was right, and that's one bit of advice I've taken to heart and always remembered. I've tried many, many things to help my child. Fortunately, most of them did help in some way. A few didn't. But , that didn't mean they weren't worth the trouble of trying....and my son definitely was worth the trouble!! Keep your appointment with the DAN doctor, keep trying to improve your sons life, and avoid that nurse-practitioner in the future! She probably thought she'd really helped you out by making you cry...... Joan And PS......my sons prescription for the one med he takes has been reduced by half since starting the Secretin.... Guest guest
Jeannie, This nurse is an idiot!!!! Never go back to that Dr. and definately find a Dan Dr. Regardless of the condition that anyone has and is trying to get better you just do not sit back and accept that, you research and keep researching until you find something that works. I know how you feel I have cried a few tears myself but will NEVER give up the fight! I hope you do not either. This nurse did not have a clue! Chin up and keep fighting!
