Guest guest
You probably experienced what is called the dawn phenomenon. The rise could have also been due to stress. These are only a couple of the things that make having diabetes soooooo much fun! Dave RE: Question and Suggestion Lasagna has a lot of protein and fat in it. Protein can cause a rise in blood sugar several hours after it's eaten (I think 50% of protein is eventually broken down into glucose, and 100% of carbs), and fat slows down the absorption of any carbs you've eaten. So something like lasagna or pizza will generally make your blood sugar spike higher and stay there for longer than other foods, even if they have the same carb content. Guest guest
Hi , This is not unusual. The difference can be caused by meds, exercise, stress, any food you ate, perhaps you did not have a full sample in your test strip at home, or even when you last took your meds or even the difference of meters from your Prodigy to the meter the hospital had. Generally when you have surgery they tell you to take less insulin because they are afraid of a low on the table. Not to worry. Ruth From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of S. Guest guest
, I have found that my Prodigy meter reads my sugars a lot lower than they are. Not to long ago I was at the hospital and they said my sugar was at 273 and when I got home I checked it on my meter and it read 99. I don't know if it is because there is not enough blood on the strip or if the meters are just that far off. Re: Question and Suggestion This is not a reply to this email but I have a question ??? Guest guest
, It is not that unusual for BG to go up 20 points of so in an hour-especially if there is some anxiety present. How did your surgery go? Also, there is always at least a 10% error in machines. Guest guest
Remember, too, that all glucose meters have an " acceptable " error range of +/- 20%. So the reading could have been between 76 and 85 and both those readings would be considered just an acceptable variation for the meter. (This is why diabetes cannot be diagnosed using home blood glucose meters.) It could also be any of the things already mentioned. Guest guest
of course if you take your blood sugars at two different sources and one hour between you are going to get a different result. that is just common sense. karen RE: Question and Suggestion Lasagna has a lot of protein and fat in it. Guest guest
Compared to my Accuchek advantage/Voicemate, I have found the Prodigy Voice reads pretty much the same when my readings are near normal. On either side of, let's say, 100, the prodidgy Voice will read higher on the low side and lower on the high side. In other words, if my Accuchek gave me a 50, the Voice would have given me a 70. Then, above 100, a reading of 170 on the Accuchek would have been 150 on the Voice. I keep this knowledge in the back of my mind and make necessary adjustments. In the end, since the readings of the 2 meters seem to converge near the normal or preferable 100 range, I try to keep my readings there and it really doesn't matter. Guest guest
Melvin and others, It would be fairly normal for two different brands of glucose meters to be as much as 10% different. Now, as for the 270 vs. 99, there ain't no way if the meters are both working. From everything I have heard the Prodigy is quite accurate. The 71 vs. 95 is reasonable as there was an hour between the readings and the hospital setting would cause some degree of stress. In order to compare meters you would pretty much have to take both samples at the same time. Guest guest
The one thing about the Prodigy I don't like is that it does not tell you if you have " not enough blood " . But all the last talking meters are like that. If it reads lower than I think it should, I do it again. Guest guest
I've never used the Prodigy, but if it's like all the modern meters that don't talk, it won't start counting down until there is enough blood. All the meters I've used in recent years will time out or give an error message if it does not detect enough blood. It seems that they should make talking meters do the same, especially since people can't see if there's enough blood on teh strip. Guest guest
Sorry, the surgery went quite well thanks. RE: Question and Suggestion Lasagna has a lot of protein and fat in it. Protein can cause a rise in blood sugar several hours after it's eaten (I think 50% of protein is eventually broken down into glucose, and 100% of carbs), and fat slows down the absorption of any carbs you've eaten. Guest guest
Keep in mind, that if you are 90 or 100, or 150 or 160, it isn't any big deal to not know exactly what it is. The present technology of invasive testing is probably as accurate as it will ever be, and hopefully we will see a non-invasive device emerge onto the market in the not to distant future. Of course, accuracy will still be questionable with that new technology, but my thinking is, as long as we know, within a certain percentage, of where our bg is, we can manage our diabetes fairly well. Guest guest
I have been on a lot of groups but this group is the greatest. With this kind of knowledge i can be knowledgeable about getting the truth about diabetic care. My doctor knows 0 about diabetes but as long as this group is going I really don't car what he knows. Thank you for all the responses to my question and blessings to all. My surgery for the rotator cup came out fine a lot of wear and tear from years of what I don't know, but I think I will survive. Sincerely, S. 220 E. Vinita Rd Nowata, Ok 74048 And Mrs. Wolf I use jaws 8 too. RE: Question and Suggestion Lasagna has a lot of protein and fat in it. Guest guest
I have had two torn rotator cuffs. I never had surgery. Each time the pain stayed with me for nine months to a year. I hope you have better results with your surgery. RE: Question and Suggestion Lasagna has a lot of protein and fat in it.
