Note to newly diagnosed--this may be a discussion you want to avoid. That said, I also want to say to newly dxed or those with mild MS that not all MSers will progress to the extent some others have. We love you all and don't want you to worry unnecessarily about the future. Okay??? love...SharonHow

do some MSers deal with the loss of independence if it comes to them?

How do they ask for help? When do they decide to ask for help? It was very hard to first accept the idea that I needed help with things and then even harder to actually accept help from anyone. I have always been very independent. Independent and stubborn. I also don't like to put people out. So, I didn't accept or ask for help until I nearly killed myself behind the wheel. The day of my car wreck I shouldn't have been driving. For several weeks (or more like a month or two?) I had been feeling spacey and was having a hard time thinking clearly. When I drove I would get very tired and had double vision and tried to clear it up as I was driving by shaking my head. Now I know I should have not been driving. Hindsight is 20-20, as they say. That day I decided to go to town and get some groceries at the

store before it was time to pick up my granddaughter at the bus stop. I called my DIL from town and she said she would just walk down to the bus stop but she was 8 months pregnant and I didn't want her to have to walk that far in the heat, so I assured her I would make it in time. I really didn't have enough time to get to the bus stop, but I was adamant. So, I went too fast and the rest is history. But I didn't think I had any other choice. In actuality we usually do have other choices but either our pride or our sense of independence gets in the way. I could have told my DIL yes to go ahead and walk to the bus stop and I would pick them up on the way home to the farm. I could have called Challis but it would have been a real imposition on her because she had a little one that she couldn't leave at home with her older boys and it was nap time. She only lived a few miles from me.

What's done is done and I hope I have learned from my mistakes. I do, however, want very much to drive again so I can go to church when I want. I just want to be able to go to church! (now I'm getting teary) My regular doc and my neuro both say I can drive again so we'll see what happens from here. I like to think I have learned my lesson and would be smart enough to not drive when I didn't feel safe but what if I really wanted to go to church and no one could take me? I wonder what I would do under those circumstances? I'm only 56 and I'm too young to be dependent on my family for everything. Sometimes I would just like to go places by myself. I don't want to be stuck at home all the time. I want my independence back! It's such a hard thing to deal with. But then I think too about how hard it was to be tossed around that van as it rolled and rolled. And how

hard it was to fight my way back from death. And how long it has taken to recover. But then I think "I want my independence back!"We all want to hang on to our independence. I may have lost part of my independence but then I think about a few group members like in the UK who is dependent on her hubby and help to do most things, Kathi in MI who has to have help to move her body from bed to chair and more. Then there is Jeff (who isn't currently a group member). Jeff is paralyzed right now and we hope and pray he gets better so he can be back at home again. How do they do it? How do they manage with the loss of independence? I think I have rambled on long enough here....and I hope I have made sense.loveSharon This email is a natural hand made

Good morning,At 12:30 today I will be seeing Dr. Apatoff of the newly formed JudithJafee Center for Multiple Sclerosis. I had seen him probably over a yearago, and now I'm heading in for a long over-due follow-up. Pretty muchthe focus of my meeting with him will be my concerns regarding Tysabri, and this new report on melonoma. My mom has had a few spots of such, and my dad's brother had melonama that metastasized to his liver andhe died in his early 60's...so, that is one concern. The other is, I need totake benadryl each and every time I receive Tysabri--does this mean I'mallergic to it? I think perhaps so. But, if I were to stop Tysabri, how con-cerned should I be with the 'rebound' effects reported when stopping. i.e.,there are those whose lesions multiplied like crazy when stopping it. Lastly, should I consider LDN? Dr. Apatoff is one of few MS specialists I under-stand, who is

prescribing LDN. These are my questions. Sound legit? AnyI'm missing? thank you for all your support and wisdom! love to all for agreat day. always, kate

Sharon,

You ask "How do they do it ?"..The answer is... We all do the best that we can just as you are doing. We are all at different stages and doing the best that we can is oftentimes an ever changing learning experience. So surely we will make mistakes. The critical thing is to maintain hope and never quit. Needless to say, easier said than done.

If we can get past that resistance to accept help, we find that most folks really will help...and it is not so difficult to accept it.

So keep on doing the best that you can and thank you for all that you do...you help many.

Regards,

Tom

Thank you, Tom, for the compliment. I do appreciate it!Hope. That is the crucial word, isn't it? I am usually a pretty positive person although I can get down in the dumps just like anyone else. I don't want to get the electric power chair because I have hope that my feet will improve and I won't need the chair! Thanks for such a positive post, Tom. It's always good to hear from you.hugs))Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Amen Tom. Very, very well said. I couldn't come anywhere close to this.

And you're so right... people really will help. My Mom mentioned how far away I lived from her and me having a little one. My little one could have tagged along, she could have stayed with her brothers for a few moments, I don't remember anything of nap time, I lived maybe two miles from that bus stop and the bus had stopped at the end of my road before when needed... I didn't have a vehicle, but I would have walked if I needed to. My husband would have left work to drive to the bus stop. Neighbors would have gone. None of that matters. And I bet if given the chance any of us would have done what we could to help. And that's without knowing the way that day ended. <g>

I bet the real reason is that with a chair over a scooter you won't be able to "accidentally" <wink wink> run into the heels of people who annoy you. And all those teens who dart back and forth in front of you, becuase that's a really cool game to play with someone in a scooter, might trip you up if it's a chair you "accidentally" <wink wink> run into them with.

Hmmm... I think a chair should come with one of the bug zappers you gave us for Christmas. With a nice long handle. LOL

Get the chair. We'll make it look like a throne. We'll even let you wear a tiara if you want. Okay, fine, just the throne.

I'm already looking for just the right bumper sticker. LOL

Ha - no one told the residents at Willow Park - even with a governor on the things - staff and visitors got feet run over - I know one kept chasing me to kiss me

visit today

Dr. Apatoff is one of few MS specialists I under-stand, who is prescribing LDN. These are my questions. Sound legit? AnyI'm missing? thank you for all your support and wisdom! love to all for agreat day. always, kate

walmart is the only place i shop because of the scooters.i enjoy ramming my way through groups of folks and then innocently "apologizing".annetteSmyelin groovy wrote: I bet the real reason is that

with a chair over a scooter you won't be able to "accidentally" <wink wink> run into the heels of people who annoy you. LOL Get the chair. We'll make it look like a throne. We'll even let you wear a tiara if you want. Okay, fine, just the throne. I'm already looking for just the right bumper sticker. I shop mostly at Safeway or Albertsons where they also have scooters with big

baskets. I am the " terror of the aisles. " There is a local chain, Andronico's,

which has luxury carts, but they have big wine displays on the ends of

the aisles,

so I am a bit more careful there.

Keep on pushing,

love,
