Understanding Insulin

I am currently not using insulin, so I really don't know a lot about how it

is used.

So, I am wondering, can it be used on an intermittent basis. For instance,

you are using oral medications, but for whatever reason, you ate too much or

just the naturally unnatural way this disease works, you find your blood

sugar level high. Let's say 175. Could yu use a dose of insulin at that

time to bring your sugar back down. You would, of course, have to have

taken Harry's advice and learn how much insulin will decrease your BS by how

much.

Is that a use of insulin or does it have to be used pre-meals to cover what

you are going to have?

Thanks!
