Guest guest
We have signs in the waiting room and by the scheduling/admitting desk that say " In consideration of other patients, and to help us serve you best, please turn off your cell phone. Thank you! " Of course some people may need to have it on vibrate or whatnot if they need to be in contact with say, children, but for the most part this has cut a lot of our issues down. It will never fully resolve it, though. I have had to ask a few patients, especially teenagers, not to use their phone (i.e. constant texting) during treatment. If delivered in a friendly and professional manner, most people will be reasonable. I find it incredibly rude, however the culture is changing with time. a Hranicka, OT/L Clinical Program Leader Occupational Therapy, HealthPlace Physical & Hand Therapy Tuality Healthcare Hillsboro, OR erica.hranicka@... Guest guest
We made a couple of signs that are in the waiting room and gym area asking them not to use cell phones in order to improve pt care for everyone. It has worked well. If someone overlooks it, we just bring it up. Guest guest
Cell phones can be a nuisance in the clinic, but: In our outpatient clinic, we once had an MVA patient who " couldn't move her neck " and had " zero " neck AROM when tested - BUT - she completed her exercises in the clinic with her phone tucked between her head and her shoulder while she chatted with friends, occasionally switching sides as she changed exercises. The therapist documented her observations. The patient was furious when the lawyer told her she did not have a case and the patient asked (demanded!) that the therapist change the documentation (not done, of course!). On a similar note, we had a patient who " couldn't move " during the evaluation. But when her cell phone rang in her purse that was on the floor behind her chair, the patient swung & reached down to grab and answer the cell phone! Another great observation to document! Guest guest
Since most cell phones in use today are equipped with cameras, there is a potential patient privacy issue if cell phone use is allowed in your clinic. As we have seen from news reports, it is very easy to take someone’s picture without their knowledge by using a cell phone. It seems like the signs are an good solution for our clinics.
