Guest guest
Welcome Kaitlin!! Yes, you can lose weight just by exercising as long as you're eating in moderation too. Don't be radical and cut something completely out of your daily intake. Just eat balanced meals (that include fruits and veggies), drink plenty of water (at least 48oz) and exercise for at least 20 minutes everyday!! I think it would help if you kept a food journal for a while too. That way you could really examine what you're eating everyday and find ways to cut fat and add healthier foods!! Above all else, don't get discouraged. We are here for you!! Good luck and post often!! ~~ Hello, My name is Kaitlin and I am 183pounds. Guest guest
Kaitlin - Welcome to the community. You have come to a great place for support. Exercise is important for weight loss and for your lifestyle. You also need to adopt good eating habits and portion control and drink lots of water. The most important thing is to learn to make good food choices for a lifetime whether you eat at home or somewhere else. Good luck with your journey! Sherrie K (MN) " Dream as if you'll live forever. Guest guest
First of all, are they going by the TSH, and could you post the full lab results on this? Second, it is total idiocy to go by the TSH, IF that's what they're doing, since you positively have NO thyroid for the pituitary to stimulate. That's the part that I don't understand about these supposedly intelligent doctors, as in, " What part of this disease can't you understand, it's so obvious!? " . Common sense says that, with absolutely NO thyroid hormone production, the whole darn amt needs to be replaced, since there's no thyroid activity whatsoever, and that would mean at LEAST 3 full grains of natural thyroid or (someone help me out here, please), or approximately 150 to 300 mcgs or more of synthetic T4. The healthy thyroid makes anywhere from around that amt going upwards, varying some from person to person, but I don't think it EVER made hardly any less than that. I know, there ARE varying opinions on that, but I would LOVE to see your Free T3 and your Free T4 values, NOT the TSH. The TSH is THE most useless test, esPECIALLY when someone has no thyroid for it to " haggle " at. Guest guest
Get copies of your tests.... It's possible to gain weight when hyper, but not common.... I'm wondering.... there are folks that have various issues that can cause TSH testing to be VERY inaccurate... showing false lows when the thyroid hormones themselves are very low... (TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone.. ) Weight, to gain, lose or maintain as to do with metabolism. You control your food intake and exercise to work in combination with your metabolism to gain, lose or maintain. If you are exercising, and watching your calories, and not losing weight.. there is something wrong. You have inflammation, but no nodes or anything, that they've said..... so I wonder about your hormone levels. I was hyper from puberty on, finally going into storm in my early 30's.... I had trouble with weight all the way up until I went into storm. I was not fat, I was muscular, my BMI was 21 even though I weighted 277 and had held that weight through most of the time I was body building... but then went into thyroid storm and had trouble eating enough to stop losing... What I'm trying to say is that we don't all react the same way to hyper or hypo... and just because they say that your levels are 'normal' and every thing is okay... well... you seem to already know that something is wrong.. You've been working hard to maintain a healthy weight and it's not working.... why? You aren't hiding in a closet at night eating bon bons while every one else is a sleep, are you???? (Please, that is meant as a joke!!! hehehehe) I think it would be a VERY wise idea to give your doc a call and ask for copies of your tests, if you're in the US it's the law that they have to give them if you request, and some of them will ask for a copy fee, so be ware.... but they have to give them to you.... I would VERY much like to see what they have been testing.. what your values are (and the lab's ranges) and see if we can spot something that they are not seeing.... I'm not saying that we are experts here... but we know a great deal about how to interpret these tests.... This could be a case, as one example, where you are hormone resistant but the labs they are taking are showing you as having an excess of hormones, not because you do, but because your body is unable to use them.... or one of several other possibilities.... Lets see if we can help you figure this out... it's not fair to have to fight so hard and have things not work as they should... and have everyone tell you that you're just fine... therefore it's not working is YOUR fault..... I must start off saying I dont read any of my blood test results and I will try best as I can to explain my situation.Starting September of 2002 I started gaining weight about 20 pounds concerned I went to the doctor and asked my thyroid be tested as I had read an article about hypo and I felt I had many of the symptoms tiredness, achiness, mood swings, etc.I tested and 2 weeks later still had not heard back from my doctor - I finally called and was told I was ok not hypo and blood work looked normal. So I continued to diet and struggles to lose 20 pounds only to gain back 30 pounds. Since that I have numerous urinary tract infections, kidney infections, and contats urine tests that should I should be diabetic though blood work shows the contrary.Fast forward to 50 punds heavier and these past four months. I got a new doctor due to insurance reasons and explained my previous tests, etc. She promptly ordered more blood work and called me back in 2 days! She ordered the labs on my previous tests and all four showed I was hyper! my previous doctor failed to mention that...She referred my to an endrcoronlogist who ordered more blood work...again. I t showed hyer activity...I was put on Metabol heart medication...I was sweat had serioud dandruff ( never had that before) and I have spent $1000 on a personal trainer & ate so strictly I was certain I would lose 50 lbs in six months...I have lost 10lbs.She then sent me to an RAI uptake test last week..I waited till today to get my results...from the recopnist at the office to be told no cancer or tumors...good news but still inflammation...I could have a follow up appointment in August if I would like...I lost it...Two years and counting and another 3 months! Guest guest
Hi Tashana, Welcome aboard the learning group and be prepared to answer lots of ???'s. Sorry to hear what happened but you are not alone there are many here that have had the same problem as you, I'm just hypo and not sure why. If you could post all of your stats from the tests that you have had done and where you are now and what your doc is doing for you that will help the girls when they get online to give personal advice that will be just for you. Bear in mind that we are all speaking from our own experience and from what we have learned from each other. So the more info you give the better. Again welcome and prepare to learn. Guest guest
Hi, Tashana, Welcome... Dawn already gave you a howdy... and I see you posted your numbers... you and a total thyroidectomy... and right now your TSH is too high... if you have the lab's ranges (usually in parenthesis right next to your value) on the Free T4 and the Free T3.. we'll need that on all your future labs when you post them... for now.. your gland is gone, your TSH is too high so the first round of questions is: When was the surgery? How long after the surgery were these labs done? Are you on replacement hormone yet? Which one, how much? How long have you been on it? Were you Hyper or Hypo before the surgery? Ideally TSH should be as close to zero as possible when dealing with thyroid cancer. So you have a ways to go to get it down. Beyond that you also need to be sure that your Free T3 and Free T4 levels are correct for you... I know this may not make a whole lot of sense yet... but you'll catch on... and when you do get lost or confused (and we all do so no worries there) don't be shy about asking... We have a web page at our site that you might want to go over... it will give some basics on the hormones, meds and tests... to get you more familiar with what we talk about around here.... www.thyrophoenix.com/thyroid_101.htm And, as Dawn said.. we're here cuz we're living with thyroid disorders and had to learn as we went.. So grab the hand of who ever is closest and head on up the road with us... Most of us still have a longish journey and you're welcome to come along! Guest guest
Hello, You're right, I should have poted the ranges. But first, let me answer your questions.... When was the surgery? May 18th How long after the surgery were these labs done? The labs were taken a week after the surgery Are you on replacement hormone yet? as of today, I just started my meds. Cytomel 25MCG and Levoxyl .088 Were you Hyper or Hypo before the surgery? Oh hypo all the way baby!!! The reason why my TSH was so high was to get me ready for my RAI treatment. I took the scan this morning and it all came out negative....thank the Good Lord!! Guest guest
That's a huge amount of T3 (Cytomel) to start... how are you feeling with it? The lab values you've give us are showing you were in need of replacement hormone.. but if you've just started on it.... it's gonna take another 6 weeks till you can have the labs done and get an accurate picture of how your body is responding to this dose... Let us know if you start to feel weird with this combination.. it's an awfully how dose of T3 to start with..... Not to scare you... just so that you are aware... okay? Have they told you that you need to take both of these on an empty stomach? Four hours after eating and 1 hour before? How is your pulse rate, right now, as you are sitting at the computer? Guest guest
Yes, my next visit isn't until next month. The only thing I have felt are weird pains in my legs. Maybe not pain, but the feeling like I have over worked my legs. This combo is only temporary (13 days) after that it will be Levoxyl by itself. Of course this depends on mu next lab results. I feel fine, but by the evening I crash. I am only taking half of the cytomel, one in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. I just took my 60 second pulse and it is about 70 (I almost lost count....he, he, he) > That's a huge amount of T3 (Cytomel) to start... how are you feeling with > it? Guest guest
Welcome Anne! I think you will find lots of like folks here as well as good input for any question or comment you have to make. Post away to the group and enjoy reading what others have to say as well. Best to you - Katcha (Copied over from my Moderator's email) Hi! I'm not sure if this is the right email address to send my reply, but here it goes I just started reading the book " Intutitive Eating " . I gave away all 250 of my diet books as I am sick of dieting!!!! For the past 13 1/2 years I have been obsessive about trying to find just the right diet. Our grandson came to live with us when he was 9 months old because his parents could not care for him. All four of our children were grown and out of the house. I quit work to stay home and provide a good life to our grandson. Throughout the years of him growing up, I managed to put on 30 lbs by eating all kinds of food I didn't usually eat and eating them in LARGE quanities. I have been using my grandson as an excuse for not losing weight for all these years. I have decided it is time for me to stop. I really think dieting has contributed to helping me gain all this weight. It is important to me that I regain my healthy attitude towards food so I can lose the extra weight. I am hoping the support group will give me the help I need to stick to this healthy approach to solving my food issues. Thanks for letting me be part of the group, Anne B
