I'm being plagued by my current manager to bring in my original license to

display. I'm just a contract guy and my pocket license has always been

sufficient in the past. She says " this is a new Medicare regulation. "

The manager likes to imagine I actually work for her and will say pretty

much anything. I simply don't believe this latest.

Anybody know anything about this?

Barret I am unaware of any medicare reg as licensure is a state issue. I know

here in NJ that the state reg does require the original. Do the Ohio Licensure

Regs require it and perhaps she is confused?

Barrett,

We have gotten away with very nice color copies of our licenses.  They look

like the original but if copied show up poorly and with the copy written all

over it.  This gives us a little security should someone take it off the wall

and modify it.  As for a Medicare regualtion I have not seen the documentation,

it is a state law here in MI.

It had been my experience in the last several clinics that the licenses

even of travelers need to be posted. I am not sure of which regulation

it is but I believe there is one.

Thanks!

I don't know what the regulations in other states are but in Arkansas it is

stated in the practice act that you must display your current license in the

place you work. No one that I know of has ever objected to a copy as some

therapists work in more than one location. You are also required to display

the address for the licensing board should any patient wish to send in a

complaint to the Board. Displaying your license accomplishes both of these

requirements.

Barrett-

Greetings from a fellow Ohioan.

Here is the citation from the Ohio PT Practice Act Rules and Regs.

" (B) Licensees shall display the original license certificate at their principal

place of business and shall have available at all locations of service delivery

a copy of their current license information from the Ohio e-license center

verification page. " (https://license.ohio.gov/lookup/).

As long as I have lived in Ohio (23 + years) this has been the case.

Ohio just recently eliminated the pocket license in 2010 so now if you want to

carry something in your wallet, you can print out a verification and fold it up.

Joint Commission does require that I check and verify the licenses of all my

staff ( PT, OT , ST etc) and have those verifications readily available at

their bequest.

PS- I miss the pocket license, too. Now it's just my APTA card.

In each of the states i've ever been licensed in, an initial certificate

suitable for framing is issued (the " original " license) and then, with every

renewal, a ~ 4 " x 6 " is issued, accompanied by one or two " pocket-sized "

licenses, the size of a credit card, so the therapist may always have it on

his or her person.

Most states require the display of a current (not the original certificate

from back when we had to be under the direction of an MD in Connecticut 8^))

so either the 4 " x6 " or the " pocket-sized " would be appropriate to meet the

state requirement.

I believe that the question at hand is the validity of the " pocket-sized "

license for the employer's purposes.

However, if the employer has a local policy mandating the presence of the

original license to hang on the wall for appearance purposes (in addition to

a legal current license), they may make any policy they wish. They can say

" My way or the highway! " and a therapist may choose, based upon whether

they believe that they can get a comparable job in 15 minutes like they

could in the old days...

Some surveyors still like to see them " hanging up " but there is no

regulation I am aware of. When I am faced with these issues, I simply

ask to see the regulation that backs up the request

Re: A new medicare reg

I'm being plagued by my current manager to bring in my original license

to

display. I'm just a contract guy and my pocket license has always been

sufficient in the past. She says " this is a new Medicare regulation. "

The manager likes to imagine I actually work for her and will say pretty

much anything. I simply don't believe this latest.

Anybody know anything about this?
