The Joint Commission is a deeming organization for CMS, so they have to

survey using the CMS rules/regs and conditions of participation. What the

Joint Commission requires is " positive source verification " , which means we

can secure licensure verification documentation only from the licensing

agency. So for my staff, I cannot accept a printed licensure certificate

even if they give it to me. Rather, I can only print the licensure

verification directly from the state regulatory agency's website (or I have

to call the agency and have them mail it to me if it's not available

online). The reason is that it's so easy to forge licensure certificates or

renewal cards nowadays.

Of course, state law may still require you to display the license, but The

Joint Commission has required positive source verification for quite some

time now.

Barrett,

Here's the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual...

https://www.cms.gov/manuals/Downloads/bp102c15.pdf To my knowledge, that

kind of thing hasn't changed in Medicare regulations.

From a the perspective of a state practice act, I could see a license

needing to be posted for public to see. (Hair dresses have to and they are

" contract " professionals.) I would not see her request as being unusual from

a legal perspective. I would also think, in light of fraud and abuse, it

would be a necessity to actually know you were a physical therapist. She

could probably verify this online though - I know MI has a license

verification online and a way to easily know if the licensee is in good

standing.
