Guest guest
Dear Listserve: We are an IRF that is a part of a larger acute care hospital. We are having some difficulty getting the patients admitted into rehab in a timely manner, distracting from our ability to complete the therapy evaluations on the same day as admission. Does anyone know if we can send our inpatient rehab therapists to the acute care setting to complete the inpatient rehab evaluations if they are simply held up due to a transport issue? We would then document the evaluation after the patient is placed in the computer system when they physically arrive. Obviously, this is somewhat out of the ordinary, but I haven't seen any regulations that would prevent doing so. Is anyone else aware of any regulations that would prevent doing this? Thanks, Curtis
Guest guest
* Unfortunately there are regulations and guidance that say you may not begin therapy evaluations until the patient is admitted to the rehab level of care and ORDERS have been written to initiate services. http://www.cms.gov/InpatientRehabFacPPS/04_Coverage.asp#TopOfPage Use this link, go to the bottom of the page where the National Call clarification pdf documents can be found. I recommend you print all 4 series that are present but that specific answer is found in Series 4, page 1 of 16, question number 1. This translates back to Federal Regulations Title 42 and the guidance for conditions of participation for hospitals. (Rehab is section 412). You can also reference Series 2, page 3 of 7 questions 3 and 4. Hope this helps! *Darlene L.
