Guest guest
Hello everyone. My name is Maggie. I live in New Zealand. I'm totally blind as is my husband Trevor, and our son Neil, aged 12 is partially sighted. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last week, and have been placed on two metformin pills a day, not sure of the dosage of each one. At this stage they tell me I only need to have my blood sugars done every three months, but I am in the process of hopefully getting a talking glucometer through our foundation of the blind sometime soon, so I can keep tabs on what is going on with my sugars myself. I look forward to reading emails from the group and learning by other's experiences, I can't think of any questions right now, but I'm sure I will have plenty as time goes on. Hugs, Maggie. There's music in a horseshoe, there's music in a nail,There's music in a tomcat, when you stand upon his tail.

Guest guest
Hi , I'm one of the younger members on the list. I'm 26 and reside in Canada, and I've had type 1 diabetes for almost 17 years. I've been legally blind since birth, so it's completely unrelated to diabetes, even though most people who meet me think the diabetes caused it. I hope you find this list useful, there's lots of knowledge and experience here. Jen
Guest guest
Hi Sounds pretty good. I didn't know they could be detached. btw a stone is 14lb. . From: LaFrance-Wolf Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:05 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: RE: Introduction Yes, . Loosing weight is difficult as eating less means taking less insulin and figuring out how much less can be a problem! But, I like , love the pump. They now make the pumps so that you can disconnect when taking a shower, swimming or for any other reason for a short time, so in that way it is convenient. About the only time it is cumbersome is if I do not have a pocket or wish to war a dress. I keep mine pump in a specaially made plastic case wheihc has a clip on it, so I havng it the waist band of my pants or skirts. But, since having the pump (and going thrugh extensive training at first), my A1C is usually under 6. P.s. How much in pounds is a stone? (smile) Introduction Hello. Guest guest
Correction to my last post, and not that it matters to anyone, and totally off topic (sorry), our recipes are measured in imperial, even though our food is measured in metric. Guest guest
Hi Canada? your making me jealous.Grin. All very confusing isn't it? Still no one ever said life would be easy. Thanks for your welcome.Btw humour is what keeps me going. . From: Naessens Sent: Friday, July 18, 2008 8:30 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: Introduction Hi , I'm coming in a little late, but would like to welcome you to the group! And thank you for making me laugh - your description of your dietician is a hoot, and closely reflects my opinion of our own dietician. My husband is a recently diagnosed Type 2, and I've had Type 1 for the better part of 20 years. I'm a pumper for the last half year, and it's made a vast difference, both to the way I feel and to my A1C, and overall health. Since I started, my A1C has dropped from a 12.3 to an 8.3. I just went for more labwork today, so we'll see how well I've done. We're in Canada, so we also have the messed up measurements here too, and very closely matches. We measure our BG's in mmol like you, so I've become pretty good at my 18 times tables so we can " talk to the Americans " *laugh* I think the only difference is that we do measure distance in kilometers, our gas in litres and I'm now pretty good at that now, and weight is in pounds at home, kilo something at the doctor, height in feet and inches, which some doctors will log in either imperial or metric depending on where their scale comes from. Our food is measured in metric, but our recipes are usually from the states, so that is measured in metric, and I couldn't tell you what a millilitre is to save my life! We do celsius for temperature, but the house thermostat measures in fahrenheit because it came from the U.S. *shrug* Anyway, makes it all fun, and glad you're in the group. More on carb counting in a minute... Cheers,
