Hi everyone!!!

Hi, it's Carel. One of your newer members. I no longerr have diabetes

thanks to a kidney/pancreas transplant. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes

when I was 10 years old. I started right out on two shots a day of a mixture of

Reg and NPH insulin, the pork kind. Have taken those two shots a day for 35

years. Humulin came along and seemed to work much better for me. I had a rough

time during my teenage years,in and out of the hospital all the time. The only

way we had to check our sugat then was a urine test where you had to put a

tablet in a test tube and with an eyedropper add five drops of urine and shake.

Wait forever then compare the color of the tube to a chart on the bottle. There

was no way to check blood sugar at all then except to go to the Dr. office and

have it done. A little while later came along the test tape, which wasn't quite

as accurate but was much more convenient. It's amazing what they have now for

checking blood sugar and all that. Well, now I feel like a new person. The

first few weeks after the transplant I kept thinking, " Did I take my shot this

morning? " . It took a while to realize thart there was nothing wrong. No more

shots. Weird! I take a lot of imune suppressants, which sometimes is hard to

manage. Thank God it's nothing like managing blood sugars. Well, enough about

me. I love reading all of your messages and learning that there are still so

many advancements in Diabetes control and treatments. Soon there will be a

easy, cure for the desease. Till then... everybody hang tough!

I sure remember those days Carol! I have been type 1 for 63 years. When I

was diagnosed, there were 2 type os insulin PZI, which was the long acting

one and Regular the fast acting one. Thank goodness things have improved so

much.
