Carol,

We do in fact have a Clinical Ladder that does include PTAs, COTAs, and ATCs.

Our ladder, from top down, includes: two managers, Team Leaders for our nine

departments, Clinical Specialists, and Staff Levels III/II/I. The manager, Team

Leader, Clinical Specialist, and Staff Level III all come with an hourly wage

bump. We currently have one PTA who is the Team Leader of our hospital OP unit.

There is a required professional points quota that must be met within the three

years prior to the employees application and a minimum amount of points that

must be maintained each year. Failure to maintain these points results in

removal from the position with a subsequent decrease in wage.

Our HR department scrutinized our program very hard and made it clear that the

Ladder could not be a " reward " system but rather had to be strictly attributable

to our scorecard (patient volumes, national outcome studies, community service,

etc...). Each person interested is responsible for submitting their application

a minimum of three months prior to their annual performance evaluation and must

present their " case " in terms of the things I mentioned above. We of course

figure the potential salary into our budget and we have been very clear to the

staff on all aspects of the Ladder.

I would be happy to discuss this more with you if you would like.

We recently implemented a career ladder which does not currently allow for

inclusion of PT Assistants. Do any of you that have career ladders in place

include your PTA's?

Jeff,

It's great to hear that you consider outcomes and community service in your

analyses. Could you elaborate on the responsibilities associated with your

ladder levels (manager, team leader, clinical specialist)? Do you have PTAs

doing performance evaluations on PTs?

Thanks
