Guest guest
Hello group: Our office has been asked by a patient to provide copies of her medical records for her to hand-carry. We are accustomed to insurance companies and attorneys making this request and have a fee we pass on to them for this service. What are your policies for passing on a charge to your patient? I ask this because we have since changed to a new E.H.R. and have to request our old records on a disk and also go to the old hand-written chart to copies lots more. What would you charge? Thanks for helping us. Alliance Physical Therapy, Eugene, Oregon

Guest guest
To be HIPAA compliant, you should be charging a reasonable fee or be at risk of the person filing a HIPAA grievance. In discussing the HIPAA regulations, most interpret this to mean the same amount it would cost to copy the records at a copy service at a per page rate. Lawyers charge more but are not subject to the HIPAA regulations so they continue to use the copy charge to make a profit. M. Howell, PT, MPT Eagle, ID thowell@...
