Steve,

We use the limited direct access that we have in Kansas (can treat without

referral if seen by PT in last year and is for same condition) in our facility

and we have not had one denial that I am aware of by any commercial insurer. We

currently have no commercial insurers who have anything in their contracts about

requiring a physician referral. Also, none require a referral to be submitted

with the claim.

I know most states allow full or limited practice without physician

referral. My question is the practical nature of payment if the patient has

private insurance. Are there a lot of insurance policies that pay for PT

without MD referral ? And if the insurance does require referral, do some

allow signature by independent Nurse Practitioners or by Chiropractors ?
