2012 Medicare Changes for the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Environment ***

In October 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will

implement new rules that will significantly impact rehabilitation services

in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs). These changes will only add to the

already complicated method by which therapy services are recorded on the

Minimum Data Set (MDS). Providers and therapists may be required to make

considerable changes to the way they document and coordinate care.****

Note that Medicare has provided further clarifications since October 1st

and there are new, effective ways to manage the fee for service within a

PPS environment. ****
