Mancie, Is this something new? I never heard of these before. I have three children and would definitely consider trying this because I would try anything to keep my kids from having to go through what ive been through. I wonder if it could help adults with chronic ear infections too?

Hi, I'm afraid I have never heard of such immunisation here in Australia. Mine you my children are perhaps a lot older than yours. (22/17/13) It is only my youngest who suffers ear infections or should I say did. We lived in the tropics when he was young (still do) and had his first problems with infections... it was almost cruel not to allow him to go swimming during the hot months. Eventually that was what we had to do. We tried ear plugs and even using "blue tack" as one ENT suggested to avoid water entering his canals. Still the combination with the humidity and water seemed to result in infections anyway. I don't really know what Texas weather is like. Don't give up hope ...he is now 13 and after 5 ops...one to go to remove the last C tube..he is seemingly trouble free. He goes swimming whenever he can and amazingly his hearing is "just on" normal. One thing I have done & continue to enforce is not allow him to swim in public pools where they seem to use masses of chemicals & have lots of bacteria. I also use a "trick" myself after swimming although I do try to avoid putting my head under water, is to dry my ear with my hairdryer! I do this after my shower also. Like yourself I pray my sons ears will never get to the stage mine did. I was only told last year that this was a possibility! My first op was 8 years ago!!. Good luck and best wishes, Audrey Question for parents Hi everyone,I was wondering have any of the children who sufferwith chronic ear infections or c-toma received thePneumococcal Conjugate or Prevnar immunization. I havea thirteen month old son who received the series andhas not had an ear infection yet, I also have a friendwhose son is twenty six months old who received theseries and has not gotten an ear infection either. Igo crazy about my son's ears being clean and stayingfree of infection because I don't want him to gothrough anything that I've gone through with my ears.Summer is here in South Texas and I am scared to deathto let him get in the swimming pool. Any reply wouldbe helpful. Thanks so much.Mancie__________________________________________________

Mancie,

I remember a few years ago I heard about a set of shots that helped ear infections in children, but didn't know the name of the series. Cody had already been thru the worst, with his ears. He has been doing great the past two years.

Hi mancie,

Neither of my children received those shots. They were not available when my children were babies. My oldest daughter had many ear infections due to eustachian tube dysfunction. It had nothing to do with either of those germs or the cleanliness of my daughters ears. I didnt smoke and she was not in daycare. She has had on cholesteatoma removed In Dec, 2002 and has had another show up. So my daughter fits none of the "typical" ear infection criteria. She was born sick and stayed sick off and on while living in Louisiana. SHe was sick one whole time while I lived In Virginia. I blame our problem on environment. When I was pregnant , I lived in a part of Louisiana where there are many chemical refineries. The only time any of us felt "well" was the two years I lived in Virginia while my husband was in the Marine Corps.

My Youngest daughter has allergies but has only had a few ear infections in her life,.

Sadly, autism is still considered a mental health diagnosis for medical

insurance purposes nationwide. Anytime a doc has mistakingly put this as a

diagnosis on a bill, it always gets kicked out of the medical side of our

insurance even if there are other diagnoses listed before that. Hate the

299.0 code (unless you need a mental health diagnosis), always erase or cross

it out. Last time something got thrown out because the doc listed that code

along with the tox encephalopathy one we use, I was told by insurance that

the code was also used for severe psychosis. It took almost a year to get

that one sorted out.

Have your docs give diagnosis codes that match the symptoms not the overall

label of autism. It has always been a pet peeve of mine anyway when you see

a doctor for an upper respitory infection and he wants to list the autism

code. It's like listing hypothyroid for me if I broke my arm. Dumb. Also

really hate when docs poo poo medical symptoms as " being part of the autism. "

If constipation and chronic coughing is part of autism, why isn't it listed

as a medical diagnosis?

In California, AB88 requires the same level of care for mental health

as it does for medical health. You still have to argue your point

occasionally, but theoretically at least, it is helpful.

This is still smart, even in California.

Hi Dina,

I believe an exclusion of health or life insurance is illegal. If you are

talking about being covered for specific procedures/benefits in health

insurance, I think you have to file a claim and play around with the wording

of Autism.

Let me tell you what we are going through........

Our 6 1/2 year old son with a dx of Autism has just been denied life

insurance. (He was covered previously under this same company)

My husband and I were renewing our life insurance policies of which both our

kids are covered by a small rider. The nurse came to our house for blood and

urine samples. Watching TV in the next room was our obviously special needs

son. Our NT daughter was downstairs in the family room and watching a movie,

she never came up the stairs while the nurse was there. Well, lo and behold,

a week later a " supplemental " questionnaire was sent to our house to be

filled out for our son. It was about " have you ever been tested for " type of

thing. I listed all of our son's tests and stated that the tests were done to

rule out any physical issues. Then I stated that our son has a dx of Autism

which is a developmental disability with a normal life span. He was refused

life insurance and we were told that the underwriters decision was final. Of

course I am contesting the decision and the blatant discrimination towards

our son.

I now stand waiting for a written description and explanation from the

company. I contacted our local Civil Rights dept. and they told me it was

discrimination also.

Always an adventure,

You should alson consider writing the agency of your state government

that oversees insurance; here in Virginia it is the Bureau of

Insurance. They are sometimes helpful in resolving problems when

insurance companies make arbitrary policy decisions.
