I don't use a billing service, but I did, and I think this would typically be

their cost to bear (although they may charge you more). Linnea

Subject: Billing Services - Is it normal to pass on the cost of a

software upgrade

Hi Group,

I outsource my billing to a billing service. That service is currently going

through a software upgrade. The benefits of the upgrade seem minimal to me

although it will include ICD-10 updates. The cost of this (almost $1500) the

billing service is wanting to pass fully through to my PT clinic. Is this a

normal / standard cost to pass on to a clinic? We currently pay 6% of collected

insurance revenues to the billing service and 2% of copays. Your thoughts?

Thanks!!

I don't think it's acceptable. You pay for service they provide but you don't

have to pay for their software upgrades. Let's say you upgraded the software in

your business- would you try to pass the cost of it to your patients or

insurance companies? I don't think so. The billing company I work with upgrades

the software frequently with no cost to their clients. That's the way it should

be.

I own my own billing service and if it is not in your contract, then it is

not your cost.

We all have to do the ICD-10 upgrades as well as the 5010 upgrades. The

upgrades are my cost of business as it is my software.

The rate you are being charged is at the low end of the scale for a billing

service. I don't know what type of volume you generate but it may not cover the

cost of software. It may depend on the software being used. If it is a

" subscription " rate that charges per use so that your biller must pay for each

customer added, the charge may be justified.

If you are satisfied with the service you are getting, calculate the software

charge as a percentage of your total cost of billing. If it is one percent of

annual cost or less it likely does not make sense to change billing services.
