It has been higher. I am on Prinavil 10mg., every day and doctor says this med is good for kidneys. So now I am something called SPS Suspension which is mixed with a syrup, they say easier for a blind person to handle. Well, my problem is trying to find something to measure it into. I am on 80 ml., which I haave been told is 2 and 1/2 ounces, so have to find something close to that to measure this into. The drug store sent me something but opening is much to small and if I use a funnel can't tell when it gets to full because it will run over. So help is needed. Anyone on this drug for lowering potassium? That's for any one can offer.

Guest guest
Hi , You have already received some good suggestions to help with your measuring dilemma. If you cannot find something that works for you, you may want to discuss with your doctor about switching to a drug called Kayexalate. This is also used to reduce potassium. It comes in a powder that you mix with a liquid like water. The nice thing about Kayexalate is that it is measured in tablespoons or teaspoons and can be easily measured and mixed by someone who is blind. If you find it difficult to correctly measure the drug you are now taking, I would discuss taking Kayexalate with your doctor and see if that will work for you. Guest guest
, SPS Suspension is the same drug mentioned, they doctor and nurse thought already mixed would be easier. Guest guest
Hi , Although SPS suspension and Kayexalate both work to reduce high levels of potassium, they are not exactly the same. They may work differently depending on your kidney function and one may work better than the other for you. Also, the side effects of each is slightly different. From my own experience and talking to others, there may be more noticeable side effects to the SPS suspension, although this will vary from person to person. For me, I just found that using the Kayexalate powder was easier to measure than the liquid SPS suspension. I hope you find something that works for you. Good luck, Re: Suggestions , SPS Suspension is the same drug mentioned, they doctor and nurse thought already mixed would be easier. When I finished this out I think I might switch to powder. Guest guest
These are for people who are running higher than normal potassioum levels. I too have CKD, but my potassioum level is still okay. I am on phoslo to reduce the phorphurus level, but that is all I take (as well as several blood pressure pills). Guest guest
Hi , The side effects for both SPS suspension liquid and the Kayexalate powder are somewhat similar. Both can cause nausea, stomach pain and constipation. From my own experience and talking to others who have used both, the SPS suspension liquid seems to cause more nausea and constipation in some people while the Kayexalate powder seems to cause more upset stomachs or stomach pain. Also, in my case, the SPS suspension seems to cause some muscle cramps while the Kayexalate powder does not do that for me. Re: Suggestions Well, so far so good. Guest guest
Hi Dave, Both the SPS suspension liquid and the Kayexalate powder are used to treat high levels of potassium. People with CKD often run higher than normal potassium levels and need additional medication to help keep the potassium normal. In addition to the medications mentioned above, people with high potassium may also be required to take various blood pressure medications to help the kidneys. Also, in some cases, a diuretic may be prescribed to help remove excess potassium through the urine.
