Guest guest
Hey ladies, I haven't posted much, I have just kind of lurked absorbing all of your great advice. I am in need of some of it desperately now. I posted awhile back saying I was in the hospital and couldn't BF so my son was bottle-fed. He then wouldn't take breast back. Well, I got tired of struggling and just pumped and bottle-fed. I also supplemented with formula. Well he is eating like 16oz of breast milk at a setting and I can't pump that much so more formula was given. BTW, he only takes 6-8oz of that at a time so maybe my milk is not rich or satisfying enough? Anyways~ over the last week I have been given him frozen bm and formula. I have been so busy with my older son starting school and so forth I have neglected to pump more than once a day. I now hardly have any milk. I can only get 2ounces a day. Help!! I just bought some fenugreek tonight but what else can I do!! I don' t want to stop BFing him especially because the formula gives him colic and I want him back on exclusive BM. I also want to actually breastfeed from my breast! again not just by bottle. But I need him to take both because I can't always breast feed. Sometimes he has to have the bottle. BTW, Zachary is 4 weeks old in case that makes a difference on what I should do. I know I am a horrible mother for letting this happen. I am very disappointed in myself. We also are still battling thrush!!! Nystatin isn't working any advice on that? Any advice? Take Care, Kristy Mommy to Austin 11/13/95 Zachary 02/03/99 snk@... Guest guest
Kristy, You are not a horrible mother. Look how hard you are trying to do the right thing. It sounds like to me that a lactation consultant at your home would be a great benefit. Start by calling La Leche League it should be in the phone book. If you can't find it tell me where you are and I will help you find it. You need to get your baby back on the breast to get your milk supply up. Start taking the fenugreek and drink lots of water. Once your baby's back on your breast you need to get in bed and nurse nonstop until both of you are back in sync. This will work but you have to get that baby on the breast. Can you trick him when he is partly asleep and slip him the breast, anything to get him used to it again. It's going to be a challenge, but you can do it. I'm sure other people have even more advice so just hang in there and know it is worth it for your baby's health. Formula will cause a lot of problems so this is very much worth the effort. Keep up your great parenting. Wendi I need help... I have failed Hey ladies, I haven't posted much, I have just kind of lurked absorbing all of your great advice. Guest guest
Kristy, THe other ladies here will have more information than this but just quickly: I would be calling the lactation consultant here in Australia. I'd also be contacting Nursing Mothers (our equivalent to LLL). To get more milk, you must stimulate the breast, ie feed and then pump regularly all day, and probably at night too. Babies tend to like bottles, because it is less work for them to get the milk, not because the formula is better/stronger etc. From what I read it will take effort and determination on your part, but you can get him back to the breast. You will also need support (here is a great place to get that). I think all the effort will be worthwhile. Good luck and keep us posted
Guest guest
Stop! Stop! Stop! You have not failed!! You are not a horrible mother!! You are a mother who loves her son and is strong enough to overcome any obstacle!!!!! All the advice you have gotten is excellent - I only have a little to add. It seems that my milk supply is directly connected to my emotions. If I'm stressed or upset, my supply goes down and my son eats less, which starts a vicious circle. So, take it easy on yourself - you can do this! Let positive thoughts and imagery come into your head whenever you start to feel defeated. You have the power within you to give something wonderful to your son. What a magical opportunity we, as mothers, have. Don't give up, make those calls to a lactation consultant and LLL and e-mail for support! We are here for you! Ellen

Guest guest
Kristy, You are not a horrible Mommy! You have NOT failed. Even if you need to give him formula all of the time, you are still a great Mommy! If you want to get your supply back you can do it! Here are some of the things I had suggested to me... Mother's Milk tea - use 2-3 bags per cup Fennugreek - not good if you have blood sugar problems- take more than the recommended dosage Blessed Thistle - take more than recommended Fennil - take more... No mint or sage in your diet Marshmallow Root - take more... Any of these things coupled with pumping more should help. Good luck and post again so we can see how you are doing. (No matter what the results are!!!!) We are here for you!
